I'd used a similar process a few years ago (before I had a welder) to put an internal hex shape into a big hand wheel I found in a skip (about 350 mm diameter maybe?) to use on my mill vice (sorry: too lazy to go out in the rain to the garage to take photos). It makes it very quick to spin the vice in and out thanks to the momentum of the hand wheel.Interesting thought process and top marks for the result.![]()
That time I couldn't weld it so I made the outer diameter of the split piece fractionally bigger than the hole I'd drilled in the hand wheel and "pressed" (hammered) them together. I think I might have filed a slot in both for a key as well (to be doubly sure it would transmit the torque), but I might be remembering it wrong.
