Twin Wick Beatrice Paraffin Stove.



Odd one. Old pattern parts, with some new design parts. Allan screws and a plastic fuel filler cap are the new design items. But Old style flues and wick mounts.

Striped down, this showed the wicks were long gone. There was some surface rust, but 90 mins in hot citric acid removed that.

Oh yes the gaskets were shot.




New wicks. But not the correct ones. These are tube wicks, not flat ribbon.
The purist will want to lynch me after they find out to make them fit I silted them and cut to width.


They fit and work.







One of the new gaskets made from sheet material left over from another job.
Yes that is the original price sticker, but it has faded years ago.




In burn, for the first time. The body was cleaned with metal polish and finished with wax.

Yes, it will get used.

Mu single Beatrice was used to heat the citric acid up.

Made a little stand for holding tungstens - just some 28-ish mm aluminium round bar with a 25 mm hole most of the way through. A magnet is set into the bottom end to hold in place on the bench.

Spent most of the day taking my 6x4 bandsaw apart and cleaning it. I bought it 8 years ago (almost to the day) and it was very very cheap and very very ratty when I bought it. Wheels were missing, switch housing was broken, one of the interlocks (stopping it from running when the blade cover is open) was thoroughly passed it, but I've been using it pretty regularly for 8 years without too many problems. One of my bugbears with it was that the stand was made of flimsy sheet metal and it wobbled all over the place.

The stand is now history:

The rest of it is in bits, with bearings removed ready to be replaced and the rest of it generally cleaned up. I'm trying to get a new switch from Clarke, along with the gearbox gasket. Failing that I'll see what I can do myself. I recently brought home about 10 metres of fairly heavy duty (something like 40 mm × 40 mm × 4 mm at a guess, although it's hard to measure with all the rust) box section that had been sitting in my father-in-law's garden for somewhere between 20 and 30 years. It was absolutely covered in a thick layer of rust, so I've been gradually removing that with electrolysis and I'm going to use it to make a ridiculously and entirely unnecessarily heavy-duty base for the bandsaw. It'll be amazing to have castors on it so I can move it around more easily, I am really struggling for space in the workshop at the moment.

The bucket I was using for the electrolysis wasn't long enough to do the whole of the (cut-to-size) box section lengths in one go, so I had to do one end then turn it over and do the other. The benefit of this was that I could take a photo showing before and after: electrolysis is amazing!

i have the same/similar saw does the motor on yours state what size hp and speed it runs on it?


its acting like the capacitor has gone but there isn't one so was just going to take the easy option and replace the motor

It doesn't have a centrifugal switch under the end cap does it? Some non-capacitor motors have a start winding which is brought in by the switch from rest, then as the motor spins up the switch opens (centrifugal force and that ) which turns off the start winding. The usual clue is that the motor runs but slowly, however if you flick the blade/ sanding belt/ whatever it's driving it will come up to full speed. Could be the switch has arced and isn't closing.

In the box of bits I got the other day was a rusted candle carriage lamp.
Rusty, dented and a few nasty's.



It was caked in old tallow wax, modern wax and bitumen substance.



I managed to get it into the main parts. The glass was already cracked, but it looks to be original. Or if not a old replacement.
I even managed to pop the side glass out.



So to remove the wax and bitumen I tried.
Scraping it.
Hot water.
Traffic Film remover.
Hot air gun.
All it did was move it around and smear it into nocks and crannies.
So Plan B.



Well I learnt something when I used that.
Yes it will melt some of the wax, but not the bitumen.
But I also found out that bitumen melts at a high temp than the lead solder holding the lamp together.



A few of the items that fell off. Gave me a chance to clean them up.



Hot citric acid, wire brush, new solder and we are ready to paint.
It also gave me a chance to remove some of the dents, but keep the aged look.

Mine's got the same info as yours, so I think it's probably the same bandsaw & motor. Horsepower is about 0.7 hp (500 W). It's still off the saw and I've got a speed gauge somewhere in the garage so can spin it up and let you know tomorrow evening if that's useful.

Hey Aardvark, about 20 years ago I inherited my grandad's old paraffin blowtorch... I messed about with it for ages but could never get the damn thing to stay lit. I figured it was duff somehow, or modern paraffin was different, or whatever, so I binned it. Then someone told me about using meths to preheat it

Skip in the morning. Was supposed to be there for the duration but customer asked to leave it for the final week. Rubbish everywhere atm.
Can also get the waste out of my lockup and actually get my tablesaw to site need to cut some trim for around the top of the walls and ridge

When I got to the stage of lining the roof I ran in a ring of 1.5 T&E through the insulation and brought out loops to where I had planned the sunken 4 tube light fittings . Then put the boarding up & skimmed then light swirl artexed it with a bread bag .

Once the whole office was rollered in baby breath pink ( don't ask ! ) my lass decided OH I'd like that for my office , " Can you put a full wall length L shaped shelf in on the rh and rear wall 900 wide , oh and high enough for me to get my legs under it if I'm sat on your grail chair , oh and at least five double power points some where near there & there so I can run two office stations ?

I lost my mancupboard for three years till she decided being inside in a nice warm bungalow was better than walking 25 mtrs back into the bungalow when it was slashing it down with rain or freezing cold .

Have a look at switch item # 174089913995 eBay ~ , when you put that number in you may or may not get the right switch but at the bottom is a slide show of similar switches . They work out around £8 machine mart wanted £ 24
