When I worked at fords they scrapped a rs 200

I think there is a difference between written off for tax reasons which we can all understand and blatant stupidity caused by management with no shop knowledge and possibly stupid ‘tidying up’ as it gives an impression/illusion of improvement .
I suppose with all had a good muck out of the wshop/shed and then needed some of the culled stuff within the week

I showed these piccys before. A lovely IMA pillar drill, made in Sweden, the swedes make good gear, Dumped in a skip at the back of a training centre. If i could have got it out i would have, but you would have needed 4 or 5 lads to lift it out. It was in good nick too.

What sort of accountant are you? Are you more ACCA or CIMA?

I’m ACCA but prefer the management accounting side like CIMA to the reporting side as in what ACA do. It’s much interesting to help a client grow and understand all the financial side rather than just deal with them at the year end.

I know a building project manager and the stuff that gets scrapped is criminal. Recent scrappage: 50 lengths of 4x3 4 mtr lengths. Unused emergency hot water chemical incident shower. Boxes of Dormer drills, all sizes. Conical step drills. Huge amount of unused roofing and joinery screws of all description. Complete pallet of plasterboard. Complete pallets of 9,15,18mm exterior ply. End of job and site needs to be cleared. ALL SKIPPED.

Must be over fifteen years since I have been on a site like that.
The first time I saw loads of unused materials loaded into walk in skips I asked the site manager who said they would over order and scrap the unused materials rather than risk running out and delaying the build.
It had all been planned and paid for by the client and at the end of the day anything helped off site was reducing the cost of disposal.

Exactly that, it's business. When a piece of equipment is bought it will be depreciated over a certain amount of years until it's worth nothing on the books. Once this happens, it's served its useful purpose as far as the business is concerned and it's time to start again. There is (sadly) no point in anyone spending any time on getting a few hundred quid for something that could simply be scrapped.

I agree whole heartedly with you explanation, your words though, its business but end with getting a few hundred quid , now being pedantic , if its business how come a few hundred quid is not income, some tax to pay, a little paperwork but some so called business man has just thrown £££££s straight in the bin. oh yes it impresses me .

obviously not a dig at you just the stupidity of waste, a tool/machine or what ever that can be recycled is very important these days and then the disregard of monies to be made out of it.

I used to do a lot of building work for the biggest U.K. Hire company,
I used to turn the air blue at what they did to plant and tools at the end of the financial life ,
I've seen ifor trailers gas axed diggers cut up ,
None of the employees are allowed to touch anything , sackable offence,

Did a big refurb after floods , yet again plant, tools, even ally scaffolding and everything in between skipped , due to being contaminated with ****e , ,
Had a tear in my eye when I left site,
MOD are unbelievably what gets scrapped ,

Don't the MOD sell stuff off as army surplus anymore ? They used to, even rifles like the lee enfields and trucks, land rovers etc.

It all seems to go through one Auctioneer....well the motorised items do...Ive actually been to the place, somewhere is Nottinghamshire I think. It was like a Forces car park...Tanks, 6 wheeler Trucks etc etc

And you won't get a good price, i had an Armstrong they managed to keep prices high by slowly dripping bits into the market

When I worked for Hewden Access the management had a clear out of the workshop one weekend, just before the directors visited...

We had a Skyjack diesel scissor that had a blown drive axle, we had already stripped the diff unit and ordered a new crown wheel and pinion set. Three weeks later the parts arrived, the engineer went to the storage shelf to get the crown wheel carrier, diff bearing bolts n caps, sun and planet gears.
To start rebuilding the axle.

Who's moved the axle bits?......Opps....

The depot manager had to sign off, on buying a complete new rear axle, which was a 4 month build and delivery time from the good old US of A.

After he personally had thrown away all these old un-wanted scrap parts.....managers dont we just love them...

They certainly get there money's worth out the land rovers .. and then most the money back when they sell them .. prices for wolf's has seemed to have gone down now though.

One of my customers customers found the idea of my customer keeping old vehicle/machines as parts donors completely politically incorrect and insisted on them removing them. Iso 9000 auditors didn’t like it either. Couldn’t understand the financial, time and environmental benefits of re utilising/cycling of used parts

Part of my responsibilities as Ops Mgr for the Middle East was to ensure that we shipped out not only the equipment to undertake the job (pipeline repair / tie-ins / diversions etc) but also support equipment and appropriate tools.

In view of the fact that our projects were in remote locations with limited support services, I had to ensure that we could strip / repair / test the equipment wherever possible, rather than fly out replacement gear.

As you can imagine, the associated equipment to work on gear rated for class 900 42” pipelines was quite varied and substantial and this was built into the price of the contract on a total loss basis.

At the end of the job, all our equipment was prepared for shipment back to the regional service centre with the exception of the support stuff which basically got hoovered up by the local support contractor. Unfortunately, they didn’t use it to enhance the performance of their guys in the field but (I suspect) sold it on.

After I’d witnessed this a few times, I decided that I would split it up into packages and give it to the appropriate technicians who had been assigned to us for the project, but who actually had very few tools to be of any real use, in spite of being very skilled in making do with precious little and at the same time being paid a pittance.

It was very humbling to have these guys come up to me (some in tears) to thank me profusely for the gift of some top notch gear so that they could operate professionally in line with the client expectations.

If the hire companies didn't trash their end of life kit but let people have it there would be fewer people needing to hire equipment.

As for the MOD, add to that all the misordered stuff that gets buried to cover up mistakes. Still, it gets a laugh down the pub when people tell the stories.

Years ago, on BT we had a directive come round “get rid of all squirrel stocks. A good friend was on maintenance at the time & his manager said “get rid of it all, needs to go for some sort of certification” a few days later the manager was out with him on a fault, some semi obsolete bit of kit that bits were no longer available for. The boss said “haven’t you got bits for that hidden away” “ no you told me to chuck them all out” boss went mad & “said I thought you’d keep back what we needed, we’ve got to change the system out know, think what that will cost”
Mate said nothing, but the thoughts were there!
