I was at the scrap yard yesterday ridding myself of my swarf mountain.
Whilst there someone weighed in a rather nice bandsaw for £25!!
The ceo decided they didn’t need it anymore and that the company can just buy material in to size....
Unfortunately scrappy knows what’s its really worth

I was watching a Bridgeport slowly rusting away in the corner of a local engineering firm I know. Hasn’t been used for 10 years. Offered them cash for it numerous times, visited a few months back it had gone.

boss wanted the space so picked it up and dropped it into the scrap skip! All the tooling with it as well. I could have cried.

How could you even contemplate putting such a pice of engineering equipment on the scales? These people have no place in engineering

The numptyness must be endemic throughout the company, management,shopfloor and even the van driver were all in a position to intercept that and didn't.

Scrap yard ugg nearly destroyed it but fortunately/unfortunately owner saw value in it otherwise it would have been mine for 30p kg
He wants £700 which is still cheap but not this time of year

I just don’t get small firms that do this, machinery and tooling are surely one of your primary assets?

I’d be tracking everything - what is worth and how much it’s making me etc. Then reviewing regularly. If something big isn’t making me money then I’d be looking how I turn it into something that is making me money?

Hang on a minute, the thick plottens . MD says dispose of kit, management convinces MD saw is scrap, company probably has a some kind of deal running with scrappy anyway, management did a back door deal with scrappy and is in for a cash back cut. Cant see any other way that ended up in the bin, just saying

Not always. I worked for a coach builders a while back, anything that was removed from a vehicle was destroyed. Simply because the directors didn't want anyone having it. They could have sold it, but they were more interested in it been trashed.

That’s this new age of management for you. You get these idiots who parachute into a company and their one trick is to cut running costs, he’s probably never used a machine like that before, doesn’t appreciate its capability, doesn’t care either because he’s not a tool nerd like us, skiing with Clive in the alps is his bag, not this greasy nonsense. End of the year he can turn round to the board and say “I’ve cut production costs by 1 million a year, we don’t need to maintain operation of those machines or buy tooling, we also don’t need to train employees how to use it or have it certified and safety checked so reduce our liability there as well, we just buy stock already sized” Lots of back slapping ensues and he moves on to become production Director at British Steel waving his past credentials of “streamlining throughput and costs reductions”. Meanwhile wee jimmy on the shop floor is quietly asking how he modifies this piece of metal thats been delivered oversized. His boss tells him to use a hacksaw. All because Mr Manager never actually spoke to the workers and asked for their input, he knew best.

Having said that, I know of one company who regularly dispose of or hide machine assets, no real idea why since the assets are generally small compared to their turnover.

Just this exactly, I see it all the time.
They don't care about anything except money, turnover and a possible bonus.

It'll probably just come down to time and money.

Hypothetically;
Saw is unused and taking up space needed for a new machine that will be earning £x00/day. If no one had the opportunity to say; "yea, I'll give you £250 and take it away right now", the scrappy option probably makes financial sense. Time (and space) is money!

Good that, thanks to the scrappy, someone will use it as a saw for a bit longer.

It could be that to comply with EU's ISO standards if the machine failed the specified safety or performance tests/checks so it was scrapped therefore no come back liability . Don't the ISO regulations require faulty stuff reduced to controlled certified recyclable scrap & the disposal certificates . My mate acquired a fantastic industrial tig machine .
Something to do with substituting roughly the same weight of cast iron engine blocks & cyl heads on the journey to the scrapyard.
It was within 1 .4 % of the required test standard so not good if you are making aircraft parts etc .

I know a building project manager and the stuff that gets scrapped is criminal. Recent scrappage: 50 lengths of 4x3 4 mtr lengths. Unused emergency hot water chemical incident shower. Boxes of Dormer drills, all sizes. Conical step drills. Huge amount of unused roofing and joinery screws of all description. Complete pallet of plasterboard. Complete pallets of 9,15,18mm exterior ply. End of job and site needs to be cleared. ALL SKIPPED.
