Just found this in “The Land that time forgot” that is the bottom bunk behind the passenger seat. (Things get quite, err, untidy after 2 weeks away...)

Don’t normally buy magazines as the prices are a bit daft, but I saw this at the services today and couldn’t say no to the front page, and my own folk to boot . Used to pass by their place when I was in and out of Stocksbridge steelworks, happy days.

And I’ve just given the Yanks on gate guard at Lakenheath a taste of high octane bagpipes! Every head swivelled to my direction as I drove through the gates, full volume music and all hi-viz beacons and flashers lit up. This showing off is getting to be a habit..

Reminds me of 18 months at Horseshoe Barracks Shoeburyness listening to the long mournful fog horns as the sodding ships came up & down the Thames in foggy weather .

Tie downs were mentioned earlier , seeing your erection reminded me of what my kitchen fitter mate used to do . He had a set of four , five gallon plastic containers with the strong integral handle in the top and ratchet straps for his tie downs . Looped in the top rings he had three loops (1.5 mtrs ) of bungee cord so that if a really big gust came the cords stretched a tiny bit to stop the fabric ripping He simply filled the containers with a hose pipe at the customers premises . In the 18 years I lived near him he never lost a canopy .

My escort while I was doing my thing at Lakenheath, I took pity on her for having to sit around looking bored while I moved some cabins this morning, and gave her a packet of Shetland’s finest fudge. Me and the previous Mrs 4String spent 5 years living and working at a wobble box park north of Oban.

The pitches were located on the waterfront, looking out to the Isle of Mull, and were exposed to the full force of westerly storms. The site shop sold literally hundreds of awning straps which were essentially a length of adjustable webbing with an eye at each, a gert big spring, and 2 wicked looking steel pegs. The idea was to hammer the pegs in, hook the eye on one peg, hang the spring on the other peg and hook the webbing onto the spring, then adjust it so the spring was under slight tension, the theory being same as your mate’s, that when a gust hit the awning, the spring would stretch.

Quite often Mr Clever would arrive and would use one of those fancy 2.5 ton ratchet straps that he’d paid a fortune for, , to hold his awning down. Even though he had the latest top of the range awning connected to his top of the range twin axled wobble box, pulled by an equally top of the range 4 wheel drive, he lacked the common sense to work out the physics of the matter. We all had a more than sly chuckle when he inevitably came into the shop and told us his awning was in tatters...

For some reason, , the Yanks were very twitchy about cameras, even to the point of making me climb onto the crane and put tape over the rear facing camera on the back bulkhead of the truck. Only that one though, they weren’t bothered about the ones on either front corner or the forward facing one in the top centre of the screen .

And I conveniently forgot to mention the built-in one in the sat nav, and kept my Olympus TG4 out of sight in my boilersuit pocket . The MOD in Portsmouth were the same a few years back when I collected some big water pumps from the shed that held the bow section, all 6,000 tons of it, for the aircraft carrier Prince of Wales. No cameras, no recording devices, no this, no that. As if I would . Sadly, I loaded them the day before they moved the section out of the shed and onto a barge to Rosyth. It was either ALE or Mammoet that did it, can’t remember who, but the SPMT’s they use are serious heavy haulers. Iirc, they had 10 axles per trailer, each axle good for 30 tons, all hydraulically steered with full raise and lower capabilities, and a remote control unit that makes mine look a bit silly .

Fitted it above the dash in one of the overhead cubbyholes using the Scania approved DIN plate, and used the adjacent cubbyhole to make a bracket for the external speaker, a holder for the power mike, and somewhere for my safety/sun glasses.

The next task is to fit and wire in a PA speaker under the front grille. Nothing’s quite so much fun as either telling errant motorists to get a move on via a loudspeaker, or driving into the yard with seriously loud music blaring out, usually a cd of massed pipe bands playing Scotland the Brave in deference to our leader, Scottish by birth but a Yorkshireman by God’s Grace .

And the opening few seconds of drumrolls while the pipers get up a head of steam never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Nothing beats a massed pipe band in my book .

Hopefully your remarks were made with your tongue firmly in your cheek, but in case they weren’t, it was fitted while taking daily rest periods, defined under EU rules as, 1, “...any uninterrupted period during which a driver may freely dispose of their time” and, 2,“...must not be under any obligation or instruction”, as per Regulation (EC) 561/2006. And as 1, it was, and 2, I wasn’t, I won’t lose any sleep about it...

Which essentially means that when I park up at night and start my rest period, (11 hours or 9, it matters not), I can do whatever the hell I want to do. Nobody has forced me to fit a cb in my own time, and I’m not being paid to do so, therefore there’s nowt anyone can do about it. If I’m to be prosecuted for doing something I want to do in my own time which will benefit me, no doubt I can be prosecuted for cooking a bacon butty, or finding a convenient lake and indulging in a quick skinny dip. Somehow I think not... And I go back many years in this industry to long before that when Driver’s Hours were covered by EC 3820/85. And to this day, the same questions crop up with sleep-inducing regularity on forums such as Trucknet.

And as for “poa”, the EU surpassed itself with that delightfully incomprehensible load of nonsense . As a driver, you’re either driving, doing “other work”, ie, loading or unloading, or you’re on break/rest. And if some dipstick at your delivery point tells you the load won’t be ready for a couple of hours, the tacho goes onto bed, simple as.

And if you work for a company who insist you use poa instead of bed, they’re probably working the oracle by only paying you when you actually work. Yeah, right . And anyone who stands for that is proof of the old saying that there’s one born every minute. I’m paid by the hour and stopped 30 minutes a day, which I can live with considering that I have at least one 45 minute break a day. If I’m sat for 15 hours on site, I’ll get paid for 14 and a half. Poa, pahhh!!!

It's just a fixed motor version of the type that was sold by Wolf, B&D etc. so you could use your pistol drill as a pillar drill. It saves making a quill and all of other associated hardware.

Few of you may remember me picking up a little tablesaw a few months back.

Been getting in my way on front of the garage door for a while.
Now I can use my lock up again I've been having a clear out and have room in the shed to get it in.
Decided to have a peek at it's workings as it's home made.

Not a bad job of it tbh. Won't be for site use (have a 12" in the lock up) just for ripping down odd bits at home.

Paid a score. Figured the fence and rail was worth that.

Motor looks near New so another result.

and I was lucky. Fits where I wanted to keep it nicely out of the way.
