I'd repair the casting defect with a bit of Isopon if you're painting it.
Yep, I’ve got some of that stuff

Provenance
This little press came out of a Dunlop Aerospace Factory that I used to visit regularly. I got to know some of the folk in the tool room and one day came home with three presses. Two like this and a baby fly press. I know this is quite old and would have been used to make aeroplane parts during the war effort. Be good to give it a new lease of life.
Now to the paint. What’s recommended? Does it need primer and paint or just paint. One coat or two? Brushed on paint or rattle cans? I’m leaning towards a non traditional colour, some folk won’t approve but it’s my press after all.
Looks similar to the one abom79 just gotcame across your original post when hunting info on mine. not quite as light as yours. very similar just scaled up and ratchet etc added

I was given one of them a while ago, it's been under the bench ever since as I can't think of anything to use it for. What are you doing with yours @Parm?
Once done I’m sure it will come in handy for something
pop by mate. il chuck it on the donkey saw. by the time weve had a brew will be cut
Il remember that one for later use.An easy option for filling a casting defect which I have used, is to hammer in some scrap lead and file it smooth.
Are you reinventing the (daisy) wheel here? Surely you only mount the daisy wheel when you have a specific need for a certain size aperture for pressing stuff in or out. So long as the centre of the cutout is aligned with the centre of the ram you're golden.
A bigger wheel would to the trick. Or don't put the pin in the middle and place the wheel wherever it suits you. However now that I’m making progress I don’t like the way the “wheel” will sit back from the edge. So a little rethink is required.

This is part of the next plan, I was trying to use the original pin locating hole to mount a larger wheel. This ain’t gonna work as I realised today. So this one will just be a plain wheel.
When I get some flat bar I’ll make a “wheel” with slots but it ain’t gonna work with the pin.
Next time more planning and evaluation required
On the modern generic Chinese one like in the picture they almost all have 4 cutouts, 1 a large square-cornered cutout and 3 identical sized slots with radiused ends.Yep I get that, but I was trying to recreate a wheel like the one in the pic below with assorted sized slots.
