Looking for a woodist..

Following the sad loss the MIL’s mum this year and her dad two years ago, I’d like to have made - or purchase and engrave - a Jack and Jill seat for the In Laws to put in their garden once it’s completed.

I’ve seen a few that are of interest, but most offerings are softwood which won’t last long without repeated regular maintenance.

I’m edging towards teak, oak or possibly iroko. All of the garden structures we’ve put up are green oak which is weathering nicely so perhaps oak would be the best choice so it doesn’t look out of place too much.

Are there any wood botherers that could possibly be interested in such a project?

I use the same guy who designed and built the existing stuff, but his workshop is based on the farm, so wouldn’t be much of a surprise, and he’s currently building 10 houses on an acre of land he recently acquired.

I had, but we’ve had to hide all mechanical fixings because “they look out of place”.

Most of the timber is dowelled, with the exception being a ridge beam, as it’s 10m in length, an we decided 5m was long enough to handle through the thicknesser.

You'll have to plane a quarter of an inch off to get past sixty years of cocks carved with compasses.

Ive made a few of these this year. I bought a load of old church pews that were in pieces. The ends are made from scaffold boards.......sold quite a few but all gone now........just posted for ideas sake

Could I suggest that you ask around if there's a Men's Shed nearby who can make this. I know our Shed would be able to make one of those no problem as we have several very skilled craftsmen. BTW I'm not one of them, I'm usually fixing the tools the less skilled members break!

But what if they agreed to make one, they bought the wood at the OP's expense and it turned out to be rubbish. Be difficult to establish if they really were up to it without giving offence..."Are you certain you're good enough to make this?"

And as we've learned from @The_Yellow_Ardvark's accounts, some MIS has self-professed 'experts' aboard.

Just another idea, we got new signage and a bench for the golf club. They are made out of recycled plastic, made to look like wood. The ones we got are oak look alike, you can’t tell they’re not wood until you are sitting on them. The colour and grain is fantastic. Should last for ever

I like your thinking , but d'you reckon plastic would be suitable for a memorial seat? Golf Clubs would be glad of the seat and appreciate the lack of maintenance - I used to spend half the Winter re-doing ours, which were teak but which some Norbert had varnished originally.

My apologies . I'd seen articles about Councils installing these, but they all looked, well....plasticy.
Presumably they go for the cheaper end of supply, and not what your late Member's family chose.
