Cheat Bob … take a 1.5 mm twist drill with you next time you got to a big Tesco , Asda with a chemist kiosk & racks of cheap specs and try a pair of cheapie specs to look at the drill tip . I had several pairs over a period of nearly 10 years ( handy for tying on sea fishing stuff too ) before I had to have proper reading glasses, computer glasses & day/ driving glasses . Even now I still have a couple of pairs of cheapies for when I use my metal lathe or angle grinder & goggles .

Do you think they would mind if I brought in my welding gear so that I can get a pair of specs that give the correct focus at welding distances? My prescription bifocals are ok for reading & everything else but not great when peering through a welding mask!

I've tried, sort of.
Specsavers will not prescribe higher focal length glasses than the norm, so I just go to the pound shop and buy reading glasses.
Specsavers will subscribe glasses for the computer which are completely useless. I know I've got 3 pairs. (Gullible or what)

For reading glasses 2.5 works for me but it certainly doesn't help with keeping your head out of the fumes.

Browsing on gumtree last Friday night I spotted a planer thicknesser for sale. I've been after one for ages so called about it Saturday morning, still there, sounded good so I made a deal over the phone dependent on me being happy with the condition when viewing. I surprised the seller by offering to send a deposit by paypal but he happily accepted. It was just as well as he had got countless calls after mine all offering to buy it!

Went to view it on Tuesday, was a 160 mile round trip but the machine now sits in my shed!

It's a Scheppach HMS260 in very good condition with all the guards, fences plus the extraction hoods that normally go missing. He was a woodwork tutor in a college & I suspect that's where this originated due to its condition. He also has a set of spare blades for it he is sending me when he finds them!

He also had a selection of sash & f-clamps for sale.

No record clamps but they are all sturdy clamps, just need cleaning.

Got the planer & the 10 clamps for £240. Those planers alone usually make £400-£500 over here!

He also had a matching Scheppach table saw for sale. It is one of the semi-pro ones, not the cheap tat you get in Lidl. It is also in great condition with all accessories but has stopped working. I offered to buy it as it is but he was an honest guy & wants to get it checked over & get it working if possible before selling it. I have first refusal on it if it's working for around £100.

i HAVE THE SAME MACHINE its agreat bit of kit and very accurate when set up correctly, just check the toothed drive belt for the feed rollers they can wear and an expensive item for what they are.

No design as such yet, I'm just far more likely to use regular flat bar, and although this stuff looks quite nice and may be great in certain applications I could probably knock something together far sooner with regular flat bar than I'll find a use for convex bar.

So wondering if I could use, as I'm itching to build stuff, but have little other steel in stock atm besides this stuff.

So was this just a random post or are you planning to build something?

Lots of things really, removing gurt hydraulic/tractor/truck/machine filters that have to be removed/refitted to access other components, riding on v belts, turning ribbed pulleys and flywheels. What I like about it is it doesn't slip squash or damage things to grip or turn them, the leather really does bite and once tensioned you don't need to hold it with two hands to maintain the grip. . Not cheap but if you ever get the chance to try one you will probably want one.

There is a 10 inch plastic handle and thick rubber strip version available where the rubber strip slides onto a groove in the handle . Mine is about 12 years old and is still able to turn things as the rubber is not in any way perished .

I've got one of those. It works great so long as you don't get the rubber strap oily.

Yes , I used the ones I found good for looking at the computer screen , your master eye is the one that you need the best lens for as your brain is used to working with it . .

Tip .
Loop several elastic bands together & loop them on the arms so they don't slip off when your welding

A few days ago, Mark, a friend from another forum, dropped by with some castings for my Wadkin saws. He specialises in Wadkin restorations, absolutely beautiful work. He gave me this.

Yes, its a bit of wood, oak soaked in what smells like creosote and set in something akin to bitumen.

Why you may ask, well its part of the old floor or the now defunct Wadkin factory at Green Lane Road, Leicester. He bought a van load from the demolition/reclaim guys a few years ago, he intends to use it in his workshop.

Here's some pictures of it in situ around 2014

Put the smell aside, I bet you’d happily take more if it was available
