@Stueeee my problem is a significant amount of turning or machining stock I have was acquired and I have no idea what it is. From memory I only have 3 maybe 4 pieces with any provenance

So would I, but I don't live where I store my supplies, even in the same town... it is much more time costly for me to travel over to find out what I have; or worse still to start a project only to find out I needed to order xyz.

Each to their own though; open to all ideas.

I've not used a welder enough to draw any conclusions yet; as my first broke when I was just starting. For the most part I need to weld / grind outside, so it depends on the whether and what else is going on, as I don't own the property. I live in an apartment with no private ground available at all, so I keep my welder and other bulky stuff elsewhere.

I’m not sure I follow that, but practice, practice and practice some more. When your confident with your kit get someone in the know to give you a lesson or two and then practice some more.

Yes, the bulk of the course is welding, Oxy, MIG/MAG, MMA then finishes with TIG. It is a mix of distance learning of the theory and then assessed practical lessons at a welding center. I've finished 12 theory modules now... more than I was anticipating, just need to do another 250 pages of reading, pass yet another health and safety test then they'll let me use their Esab 3 phase machines :-)

Now that I've got a working welder again I'm hoping to get plenty of practice in on my own between tuition at the welding center. I have a family friend who owns a Clarke 135 and he's got much more welding experience than me, so once I've got to grips with the machine and have my own proper cylinder I'll ask him to come round and supervise, to help ensure I'm on the right track.

There is six weeks available for practical work, although I'm sure a chunk of that will be classroom led instruction, health and safety briefings, etc. They have a decent setup, they even have a universal steelworker, I'll just try and get as much experience as I can; before, during and after my course.

For big bits I model it in Sketchup and keep my "stock" page up to date.

It's also handy for seeing how stuff might go together.

That's novel, yeah I can see that it might be helpful.

I had a go with the Sketchup free version some weeks ago, but every tutorial found seemed to use totally different software with tools and menus I didn't have available. I've installed Fusion 360 since, although haven't done much beyond register as it taxes my computer an awful lot when I try to run it.

I follow a few people on YouTube that got me into welding; and they all use either Sketchup or Fusion, so I'm keen to try and master one of the CAD offerings, and I'm especially interested in later on being able to use CAD models in a CAM type operation with CNC... though one step at a time for me.
