Lexi, thanks for the pictures, very interesting. I like the HF start coupling transformer, I see they use a LOPT to generate the HV in the first place. I can see the output contactor (well, two relays in parallel), the output smoothing chokes, the impressively-sized heatsink (and fan) and the attendant switching devices. I'm guessing somewhere in there is the current sensor to feed back to the control circuit.
What I don't see is the main inverter transformer. I would have thought that, even for a high frequency switching supply, for a machine of this power rating it would be a noticeable item.

On mine, the main switch mode transormers are in the middle of the main heatsink so is cooled by the flow of air. Mine is very similar but I will post some pictures tomorrow.

tips look a bit like my esab minicut20. word of warning don't forget to put the earth clamp on the work piece like i did once (kept swaping from car to sheetmetal doh!)

Still waiting for the pics Hugh! How are you getting on with it? I'm thinking of getting a plasma cutter and one of the things I want to cut on a current project is a hole (to take a bolt) through a piece of 30mm round bar, would yours manage this d'ya think? Can you make a cut from both sides if it doesn't cut through and what sort of a mess would cutting a say 15-18mm hole make?

Ratty, I wouldn't think of using any gas/plasma cutting equipment for that kind of job, unless your middle name is "butcher"!
A more subtle approach, like, as Alex suggests, a drill, may be more pertinent.
Generally you wouldn't look to go in from either side with gas/plasma. It makes an awfy mess if you don't go through all the way because the molten metal has to go somewhere. I'f you've not gone through the piece that means back in the general direction of you!
And for 30mm you'd need a big old plasma cutter!

Exactly! Although it might be possible, it's part of a sculpture and not actually fixed yet (just a pain to disentangle it
), I thought it might be possible to leave in situ and blast a hole through but as Si says..So I guess that answers my question! How about my gas cutter? same problem?
