Its difficult to generate the 12v with out the dynamo so it will be a battery operated system untill he can afford the proper one.
We are strugling to fit anything else to the crank as one side is the fly wheel the other is the drive sprockets, the small hall effect sensor we are looking at can be operated by a magnet glued either behind the fly wheel or on one of the sprockets, then we need some magic box to take that pulse and switch the coil, just like the pit bike things

I was just thinking of that. I have brand new HEI module in my shed I was looking at yesterday while trying to find something else. A simple HES, and a coil, and there you go.
Ignition advance, hmm, maybe mechanical?
It would be possible to utilise the GS mechanical A/R unit, I'm sure. Given that all that's sticking out of the lump is a crank end, it could be done.
Otoh, more sophisticated electronic A/R built-in is available if some money is spent, my XS650 Boyer ignition uses its own curve internally, and it's rock solid. It's also designed to fire one coil - so there's an idea.
There are a few Chinese scooter engines which use a DC CDI unit so, if you have the trigger unit on the flywheel and a 12v battery and coil, this is all you need. Advance will be to suit the Chinese engine, but you can't have everything.
Just modify pit bike stuff, pit bike stuff, just uses a trigger assembly,

I can see 3 very good mounting points for a 6v C50/70 contact type stator plate and what looks to be a taper on the crankshaft. Add a coil and you have one complete ignition system with an additional charging circuit. Alternatively a 12v C90 setup using the CDI unit with a more powerful charging circuit, all readily and cheaply available.
You could also add an additional larger flywheel over the Honda rotor to look period, just takes a little imagination.

HEI module.
Where the distributor is would just be one HES to trigger the module, which is an amplifier to fire the coil.

The wheels all we have found out up untill now is the OD with a tyre on is 25" we will know more in a coupole of weeks once we collect it and start re assembling it. I suspect any original ignition system will be beyond his budget for the next year or so, thats why we are looking at alternatives

Thats a pity as the fly wheel fits we tried one the same, stuff is never near by, I drove 400 miles yesterday to collect the bike, just need wheels, Mudguards, Ignition system and loads of time

FWIW, I cobbled together an ignition system for a Kohler 8Hp engine fitted to a mower, when the magneto coil failed and the cost of a replacement was just too spendy. I used an ignition coil from an old Honda twin (CB400 I think, it's not critical) and a very tired 12V m/c battery. Thought it would get me by for a week or two, turned out to be reliable and lasted several years.
I suppose the point I'm trying to make is if you're not planning to use that bike as a daily ride, then a total loss system (recharging the battery manually) can be a practical solution, and cuts out a lot of the complication.

Thanks I have ordered some electronic bits so once they arrive we can start burning and electrocuting our selves.
I feel the one in the youtube link is going to be the best solution until we can find a magneto then hide it in that.
It will only go to local meets and shows so total loss ignition will be fine, the only mag we have seen was not working and £300+.
WE really have to think outside the box with this as parts are almost impossible, still can't find another to even look at
