Don't buy HTC as there customer service is literally none exsistant. Spent £370 on a phone and the back fell off and the didn't want to know!
Samsung seem good though.

Don't count your chickens yet. If you get even the tiniest bit of damage on the case, forget Samsung factory warranty. My daughter had a tiny chip on the back and they refused to repair the faulty motherboard. The phone was in such good condition I got £170 for all the bits with the motherboard removed but they put it down to 'serious physical internal damage'. It had refused to start back up after a software update, is all.

Got home, it was plane that sleep was not a choice, so into Workshop.

Job one. The White Railway Lantern



Complete, but very rusty on the inside. Painted with emulsion paint.

See above for the fuel tank.

The main body was made from steel plate, lead solder together. Strong when fitted with the tank and door shut. But did flex when they were not fitted or open.
More of that later.



De-rusted and paint striped.

De-rusting was done with hot citric acid. You can see the results, over night the rust had gone.
Paint stripping was with hot caustic soda, took 3 hours.
Both tanks were a home made experiment. I will stress it was safe, just looked a "Bit Iffy" to quote my friend.
So for that reason I will not post images.
But the mix for the caustic soda was one heaped table spoon be litter of water.



The main reason for the body flex was the solder joints had cracked. Some this was due to age. But some was due to the force exerted on trying to remove the rest welded tank.
But , as in the tank, the gear was out to repair I carried out the brush soldering on the lap joints. Were I could open the joints up I did. Adder core flux solder and heated. Brushing the surplus along the joints.
Paint was normal primmer, under coat and Gloss white.
Were there was signs of original manufacturing or age related repairs I left them in place and blended my work in.



Fully working.
The main red lens was silicon putty into place. No other reason than the fact was I had the putty to hand.
One side lens was damaged. So I cut a new one from glass. Covered it in 6 layers of paint and distressing it between coats. Final a wipe over with battery acid to give the aged look I wanted.

The No 1 vice. As I got it.
Seized, rusty and the remains of a bad paint job.

So hot citric acid, removed the rust, followed by a hot caustic what removed the paint.
This allowed the vice to be dismantled.



I was very disappointed with the castings, pitted and a few casting holes. Were the screw sits in the moving jaw was a lump off access metal, it should of been machined away. But it wasn't.



So a few thin coats of filler to reduce the amount of pitting and holes. Not to completely cover them. But just to make painting easy.



This time, after a normal primer I used 2 coats of filler primer.
Rubbing down between coats gave me a decent finish for top coat.




Top coated, clear coat and assembled. New retaining washer and split pin used and a a good application of grease the threads. To help with the workings the slides were waxed.

Giving my masks a disassembly and cleaning. After doing some 2k epoxy painting I figured they needed an overhaul for when I do some spray painting later.

New filters also ordered. They last many years when you take care of them, the one on the right is 10 years old.

Today I did a replica repair of what the Vet did to my dogs leg except I did it to the bandsaw handle and it didn't cost £4K
I have had the bandsaw for quite a while, maybe 5 or 6 years and the handle had been repaired with some sort of epoxy before I bought it. It broke today so I had to make a couple of splints for it.

I also made a handle for the CNC control so that it is easier to pull round when I am manually adjusting. It is made from 12mm dia 316.

I then tried my hand at some friction welding

OOPS or similar was uttered.

I put a little trolley together with some old sack truck wheels and casters to move heavy stuff around the workshop.

I think it might need a handle to pull it around with as well.

........I pulled the trigger on 1/2 litre of New Holland Blue which looks a very close match. I can always lighten or darken it by adding white or black in proportion as appropriate.

Looks like I may have guessed right, it's very close - although fluorescent light combined with camera flash isn't exactly 'paint match friendly'.

Nested tables, well not quite but nested wrenches.

Original bench was built so my big Clarke compressor would live underneath. Circumstances have changed and I want a welding bench and plasma cutting table but with limited space they will have to be stored a set of nested tables.

Phone is playing up and not saving all my pictures so only have before and after

Original bench, needs to be shortened so I can get in and out of the garage extension easier and move the legs so they are welded to the corners not set in. This will give me more space for the welding table



It's quite a solid lump, the planks I fitted when it was 1st made and were 2" thick planks planed down to fit inside the bench frame




Then the camera has a hissy fit but essentially legs were cut off, table shortened and legs rewelded onto the corners, timber planks fitted, welding bench legs shortened and feet added. Originally I was going to fit casters to the welding bench but changed my mind at the last minute and used some UHMWPE pucks I had kicking about, drilled a hole and then recessed it to take an M10 coach bolt.

Slides out nicely on the pucks



Then cut the steel top down to fit the shortened bench with the plasma cutter and screwed to the planks and refitted the vice





Now to start planning the plasma table, neighbours don't take too kindly to me using the plasma cutter on out lane and I want something to catch the dross

Well that's not true.

It is a paper weight, the drill does not work.
Oh Bother I did not say.

I know who sent me this now. Sorry story, but that's for another day.




Assembled, tested and it was soon found the drill did not work.



The plug was broken, but the cable was shot. Old rubber cable. Testing showed the live side was broken. But the insulation test showed I had 1kohm between cores.
So it was rewired.
That did not fix it.


The rota was the main issue. Ignore the strand of wire wool, that's detritus from cleaning it up. Sadly the windings are broken, I will be hunting for a replacement.



The metal did clean up very well.



Painted and the drill temporary fitted.

As it is a Wolf, no old B&D or Borsch fits.

Today, between showers of rain and hailstones, this happened......... Welds aren't that great, there was also a gusty breeze [that's my excuse anyway....]





To satisfy my OCD , I've sent off for plastic tube ends for the feet, just to finish it off.

Then, once it was tucked away to wait priming/painting, I made progress with the Record pipe vice




The stand will need scraper/wire wheel treatment before priming. Vice is now soaking in citric acid - will check result(s) tomorrow after Doc visit for bloods. From paint traces, it looks like the vice was originally blue which means it will get the same treatment as the press. Serendipity!

Made an extension to my metal rack to mount the metal shear.

Saves taking up bench space.

I like making pizza from scratch but transfering them to the stone in the oven can be problematic cue a quick knock up of a pizza peel from some offcuts. 2mm mild sheet and 25x4mm bright tube, it’s quite weighty.

Got to finish early today, so as the house was quiet I had time to sort a few things out.



Fire Mans axe, no details on it. The rust and time had seen to that.



Apart from the damaged to the rubber handle, the blade is dull. looks like it was used to chip mortar from bricks.


Handle trimmed back. treated with a rubber restoring compound. The metal was cleaned back and the rust removed. The brown hue you see is a wax finished on a warm steel. It gets rubed in when the meatl is hot and seals the surface and gets into any rust pits.



Both ends were hardened and tempered. Then finished with a oil stone.

The Brass diff is almost finished



The LED's will be re fitted, I am waiting on some modern, but old looking wires. The base is hollowed out to take a battery holder and the cables to the switch.





Something fun.
2 articulated wooden dolphins. I have been building them for about 8 days. The reason? The oil and varnish finishes had to cure.

I made a pair of these shelf’s from some 316 stainless 6mm round bar. They’ll be mounted to the legs of a table via the tabs in each corner.

The 10mm torch although good wasn’t cutting the mustard, knocked up from some old pipe and scaff tube from the scrapyard. I’ll imporove the copper gas feed pipe when I get chance, was a lash up to see if it would even work.

Some of todays jobs.
First off was drilling out some 50mm dia x 13" long EN8 for guide on gear rollers, I then transferred to the CNC and bored the bearing seats.

Made a spacer bobbin for a Yacht, it had been re-engined and the shaft was short but also the coupling on gearbox and shaft were slightly different and both had female registers. I was provided with an old fashioned hand done drawing but I still did it in CAD anyway as it will be a record for me in the future if needed.
Roughed out the recess with the parting tool. I am well impressed with the Iscar Tang parting tool and I was surprised I actually managed without it deflecting between cuts.

Once the turning was done it was into the Chiron to bore the holes, one side 80mm PCD the other 82.75mm PCD but both 10.2mm dia.

Also made what is becoming more poplar now, a stencil for the fishermen painting the boats name/number on the flags for their gear, they used to just hand paint but after seeing a few boats using the stencils more are requesting similar
