Metal shaper abilities

from what im gathering these shapers are more versatile than many think they are

that other site points to other things that a shaper can do including shaping round parts with another device attached to the bed

Shapers are now old school and are really not used much in Industry. That said for a home shop they can be very handy as time is not money in the same way as it is in an industrial situation.

Exactly!! That's why we operate Myfords, Colchesters, Boxfords etc [although very capable with patience] and you need CNC and the like for your income.

but if your a noobie that dosnt know then any sort of lathe would do as the reviews says its a good machine has both lathe and milling machine all in one unit

You could buy a Myford. Boxford, Colchester etc lathe + a milling machine for that or less.

I may be a bit thick here but what does a shaper do. I googled it and got

Which means nowt to me!

I learnt on one of these at college .machine shop practice evening class its a monster

When I started my commercial machine shop I had a lathe a shaper and a 9” grinder.
Shapers are much better than slotter s and a big one can get the metal off quick,1/2” depth of cut no problem

I bought a shaper last week, my local CNC shop has refused to make pulleys for me any more (too busy) so I need a key slotter if I'm going to make them myself. Anyway, I have just watched the key cutting video on this thread. Anyone know why he did away with the clapper box and why angle the tool, surely it is easier to set the rake on the cutter?

from my reading it can rise up

the angle is a better cut and stops the deflection better
