TIG welding is definitely the way forward for aesthetically pleasing welds, even starting from scratch. broad sweeping guess but more furniture stuff (box, angle etc) will be around 2-3mm thickness with maybe thicker pads. So 100-120 amps will probably be the working range for nearly it all, once you get up to speed with it. And you can always put more than 1 pass in.
