A quick tip - to test for a fueling problem you can spray wd40 into the carb inlet with the throttle open, it saves faffing around trying to pour petrol into the carb. It will work on any small engine, 2 stroke or 4 stroke!
I sprayed brake cleaner into the inlet (air filter) of hundreds of engines to get them to fire - but never WD40.
I would think a diesel would start on WD40 but not a petrol.
Easy start, brake cleaner or a drop of fuel down the plug hole or carb is the first thing on my check list. It’s not like you are running on the stuff, you only really need to hear it fire to eliminate the ignition.

It does work, done it a few times.
I have worked on some old engines, were you had an Ether Start or Cold start assist.

I rebuilt an 044 last year, nice old saw once it had the cylinder cleaned up, a new piston and fuel side refurbished. If you left it stood with fuel in it will need a carb clean most likely. If I'm doing anything like that I send for a carb kit and renew the gaskets, diaphragm and metering arm and if it needs it new pipes for the impulse and fuel. Diaphragms don't always split but they do go hard or baggy so they don't work. Now it's done the saw is great, fires up third pull and runs like a champ.
This here. If your saws been laid up over winter with fuel left in the carb then your diaphragms have dried out. You can clean the carb and everything else all day long but it wont work until you replace those, its an easy job too. Had to do my saw and strimmer already this month. Should really run them dry before putting them away for winter.
So did my strimmer but it was not giving full power. How was yours yesterday? lumpy or anything? But it was running yesterday!
Tried petrol in the cylinder, then brake cleaner and not a hint of a sound of it firing.
The spark plug is brand new and fires outside of the cylinder.
