I was lucky, got to finish early. I had to start early. I was on the A 303 at 5am.
So home and I got one job finished.
As I got it. It needed some attention.
In bits, the shaft was solid, just need to clean up and shape to fit the head correctly.
The head was cleaned, both peins were hardened again and re-tempered. On the hammer pein you can just see the effects of the heat. I used emery cloth the clean the ends up. A Demmal to dress the 2 claws.
The shaft was not wedged when I got it. I used a Ash wedge on the rebuild.
Shaft and head fixed. The old shaft was stained with strong cold tea. It took the colour very well. Then waxed with a of the shelf hard wax.
When I cleaned it up, the head did have a "Hardness" test ring of dots. But no manufactures name, or any details on the shaft.
When the head is tapped it has a very nice "ring" to it.

That is one of the best things about CNC, doesn't matter what dia the cutter is, well as long as it is smaller than the slot width

Quick rubbish job this morning, repair 3 metal bins used outside in the smoking area of a local WMC, quick hatchet job with a cutting disk to take 200mm of the bottom and stick a new plate on, fitted some feet as well while at it to keep them off the ground, not the most glamorous of jobs but moneys money!.

Had it since 1979,
the one original part is the head,it’s had 1 replacement shaft,2 copper ends,1 hide.

I have same copper n hide mallet, still on original handle, hide is gone ,well has been 35 year, copper same as Nickks, worn one sided, but earned its keep , got it 43 year ago, have two others smaller as well.

The project has gone from annoyance at someone nicking my straight edge(borrow with the intention of not returning is stealing) to triggering a interest in making a load of metrology tooling especially after going on the suburban tools website and seeing the prices

At least 6 months - I'm told Holbrook left their lathe castings for up to 2 years before rough machining, then another year before finish machining...supposed to be best leaving the casting outside to rust and weather for 6 month then machine
Might explain why there are so few of 'em about!
I've also hear that hanging and "ringing" helps work the stresses out of straightedges etc., piece of string through a convenient hole, repeatedly clout with a rubber mallet (this may be an Old Scrapers' Tale though!)
OH! Picked up a 7x12 Clarke bandsaw today, seems to be in good working order, if a bit scruffy - EvilBay addiction satisfied for the month!
