How did he do this

Cut the taper by setting the topslide to the angle, swap to a threading tool & use a cordless drill & an adaptor to drive the top slide while the spindle turns. Would require good control on the drill trigger but its possible!

turn the taper 1st using topslide set at angle , wind cross slide in by hand going down the taper with screwcutting engaged .the depth of cut doesn't need to be that accurate and it wont dig in

@slimjim that was as close as I got but how to easily power the top slide at a constant rate the same time as the thread cutting

Is the gearing of the crosslide not governed by the thread gearing, as a percentage,

If you used that to cut the taper, the thread would follow the same?

OK, times up, couple of answers were on the right track

1. Cut taper with the topslide set at the required angle
2. Screwcut the thread using the screwcutting facility on the lathe with an indicator fixed to the lathe set to zero on the back of the topslide. Maintain the zero position on the indicator by winding out the cross slide as the thread cutting tool advances. Does require a steady hand

So would I but it's limited to about 7.8 degrees.
