How did he do this

My BIL sent me this photo the other day, it was a job for work and all the guys there were scratching their heads trying to figure out how to machine it so he went home and turned this up on his lathe.

I looked at the photo and gave up, any thoughts?

His lathe is an old Colchester, has screwcutting facility but how do you screw cut a taper on a manual machine

set the tailstock over to get the correct taper, cut the taper, cut the thread?

Offset the tailstock or headstock.

There are two feeds on my old clunker of a lathe, one does travel and the other takes the tool post in. Both can be engaged at the same time so I would imagine a feather clucker would know how to set that up to cut a taper and a thread on a taper.

Set the top slide to the angle of the taper, set the toolpost the same, power the crosslide the same speed of the threads per inch.

I have no idea really.

Turn the taper, then one thread at a time, moving the top slide in the right amount each time? Working away from the chuck with an upside down tool?

I ain't no machinest, did you guess!

@slimjim that was as close as I got but how to easily power the top slide at a constant rate the same time as the thread cutting
