Pc monitor blank

Advice please from our tech gang.

Pc was fine, returned from town and switched it on to get nothing on the screen except the Amber stand by led, tried next doors monitor and same.

Distant memory was loose rams on a pc years ago but no idea after that, going to take it to bits later for a good thrashing.. anything obvious to hit.

Hands like shovels and Internet on a phone is damn hard work

graphics card failed or shifted when base knocked sometimes needs unpluging and repluging back in

if laptop then g card failed mine did it to me so just bought another laptop instead as too old to get another gcard for it

Unplug it, open the lid unplug the graphics card and plug it back in then try it again if your still only getting the amber light, i'd try and borrow a graphics card and try that obviously if the monitor comes on it's that if it doesn't it's more than likely the motherboard.

Assuming you've checked monitor leads and tried both other monitor and its lead.

Unplug computer. Give the power button a few presses to discharge the components and open up the side. Ram should be obvious. Top RH usually. 2 to 4 sticks side by side. Quick push on top to make sure there firmly home. Wouldn't expect them to be loose tbh.
Then as Gaz says if not using onboard graphics check the seating of the graphics card.

if still wont work try a pencil rubber clean up those contacts clean off afterwards and reseat again

then try those memory modules if not working then need a gcard to then check its your graphics card is at fault sometimes its your mainboard failed

Is the pc actually powering up?

^This is what we need to know, without knowing if it’s actually powering up or what happens when you press the power button it’s difficult to say what may be wrong.

Yes powering up... well light on and making a noise, tea finished so big hammer time, will report back .

Start with the small screwdriver first or else your not doing it correctly

I do feel your pain as I don’t do computers, I wouldn’t even risk taking the case off

Does you motherboard have a separate graphics card or is it "onboard"?
Has the plug come loose?

Right.. it's on board graphics, cant see anything obvious except a yellow set of pins with a ac 97 plug lying loose next to it, suspecthe it always has been though.

Ac97 is audio.wont be the suspect.

Cheap graphics card to test would be the next option.

Yeah I have a good graphics card but it's too big so will nip to town in morning

I stuck a cheap card in mine because the drivers for the onboard were obsolete. When you start the computer are you getting a POST beep ? If you are not getting anything including BIOS messages you are looking at motherboard failure if the monitor is good.
