Best way to stop consumables running out?

Hello all.
I was thinking today about the different ways that one can stop consumables running out. My first thought was a white board on the door of the stores cupboard but was interested in any other ideas out there? Maybe an online one where there is a threshold where once it gets to a certain quantity then you have to order more? That was just off the top of my head.....ideas welcome....

If you use enough of them, personally I prefer a Kanban method - make a storage space with enough room for a reasonable amount of supplies, each with their own shelf, identify (such as paint a different colour) those shelves where you have enough stock for a week (assuming you can get replacement supplies in under a week) and then another band above that level where you have enough spare spaces for any minimum order quantities. Then once a week someone can just look to see if there are enough spaces to re-order or if there is less than 1 weeks stock left

Any sort of free or cheap software, from where you would issue things as you use them and it flags up when you need to re-order based on min stock levels.

2 bin method works well, ,,, first bin holds stock, second bin holds enough to last a normal restocking cycle. ... reorder when the bin needs swapping

staff can be lazy or stupid and not write it on the white board or forget or you know anyway I have a white board and it it the same staff who use it and the same probably that use the last or something and do not

Kanban works well I set up gaskets on a white board we have a red plastic blank gasket, when you get through the pile and see that its time to re order, but the problem is making people do it.
In a previous role one supplier worked out usage against the production plan and just came oner a week to top up stock.
Just remember whilst kanban etc improves things you still have to manage them but with the right systems it should be easier

We use a Amazon Echo at home for the shopping list, just tell it to add items to the shopping list and then it gets added to an app on your phone.

If you do write it on a white board/blackboard take a picture of it on your phone that way you'll always have a record of it with you and it will save you if some muppet thinks it's funny to wipe it off.

Yep human error is the biggest problem, like our storeman recently getting l and ml mixed up. The chaos that ensued when 20 1000 litre bulk tanks of an oil we rarely use instead of the 20 1 litre bottles that would've been a years supply turned up was great.

That sir is an excellent idea, I have quite often inadvertently been detoured close to our suppliers and not had my list to hand.
