New breed of supercharged car small motors: are they good?

Hi to all.
Is this new breed of supercharged small car motors good?

The gasoline ones, I mean.
They are spreading non stop.

Do you know if they suffer with short trips?
Is the turbo maintenance an ugly thing or is next to nothing?
How is the mileage (liters/100 km)? Good?

My father is looking for a new medium sized car, and I would like to steer away from diesels,
if possible.

One of the biggest benefits of them is how suitable they are for short journeys and stop start traffic driving than the dpf equipped diesels. I'd advise much shorter service intervals than most of the manufacturers recommend, oil starvation issues causing turbo failure etc can normally be traced back to sludge and carbon build up problems.

I have 1.4 turbo golf and I really like it. It’s happy to rev and £30 tax for the year. I was surprised and pretty pleased. I’d get another.

Can you confirm if it's to be supercharged or turbo charged - different methods of getting more performance from an engine .

I looked into the Focus 3 cylinder turbo 1 litre giving out 125ps and performance wise it certainly seems good.

The impressions I get though is if you want to enjoy the car and drive anything other than in an economical manner the MPG is rubbish, son in law has one and is only getting 27mpg.

A bit of info I was given is an owner had better hope the water pump never becomes faulty because they are inside the engine and any repair would mean a full engine out strip down...don't know if that is accurate or not, if true it seems a risky method for a component that can cause trouble once the miles are put on the car.

The wife runs a 1.2 Skoda Yeti (turbo petrol)
It goes very well & returns 40 mpg
Very happy with it
The modern diesels are just like a grenade waiting to go bang

Some are brilliant but be careful with high mileage as have been told they are hand bag engines. As soon as broken, bin and replace.

Ford never wanted to make a cam belt kit for the eco-boost engine as didn't expect them to be doing much past 120k miles.

They are brillain't to drive and can be really fun. But to get shifting need to be driven hard (I mean quick as no torque) and sometimes feels like you are beating them a bit.

If you are doing a lot of short journeys with little ish mileage then it's ideal.

VW group 1.2 TSI engines have both a small supercharger and turbo !

When shopping for a new car for mrs RDR I tested a landrover discovery 5 with the little 2litre was very surprised it felt just like the 3l v6 just a little more revvy. Went for 3L in the end just because it would be used for towing a lot. Owners seem very happy with the smaller engine I think it has 300bhp will be interesting how it fares long term and if they do start going bang.

Got a Dacia with the 900cc turbo Renault 3cyl, it's a fantastic engine...

I would Look for a Normaly aspirated engine from vw group, much more reliable and mpg in exces of 60 ! I use a vw up for comutting and it does 90 mpg as indicated on the Navigon sat nav system. 530 miles on a full tank which is approx 33-35 liter of petrol ! It’s also mapped and at 100 Bhp is not slouch for a 900kg car...

I think some of the things they tried did last so well but reliability is just an engineering exercise coupled with considerate use and proper servicing really. The diesels tend to have a lot on them that can go wrong to meet the emissions.

I helped swap an Ecoboost three cylinder engine in a Focus last year, it had already had two under warranty from Ford during it’s life. Tiny little engine hidden somewhere in amongst a vine of wiring and pipe work, two thermostats and a load of sensors. I’m not sure of the full story but there have been a few modifications to the cooling system as they were cooking engines as this one had. I drove the car after the swap and didn’t reall like the feel of the engine and the mpg display wasn’t very impressive despite trying my best to improve it.

yeah id run a new one with warranty , dont like the sound of a well used one a few years down the line, i cant see them being around at banger age

Seems pretty standard on these 1.0 ecoboost engines

The other half has an Audi A1 1.4TFSI Sport and it can shift and is very easy to make it shift seeing as it has the S-Tronic box (DSG as VW call it) Gear changes are 0.2 seconds or something like that and you don't even know it has changed gear, the only way you know is by looking at the dash and seeing the numbers go from 1-7 .
She doesn't do a high mileage so hopefully it will last many years.

Don't normally hear many problems with the 1.4 engine, The 1.2 on the other hand isn't that great!

My boss's gsxr1000 went past 100k miles with nothing other than scheduled servicing...
