I have no problem with people getting benefits when life deals them a bum hand and because the hoops they make you jump through get harder and harder, the second time I was made redundant I avoided signing on for nearly 3 months as I fully intended getting a job and couldn't be bothered with the hassle from the Jobcenter. It shouldn't be so hard to claim benefits if you need them. I'm lucky in that we've always been frugal so we could just about keep our heads above water for a while on just my wife's wage. I only signed on when it was clear there weren't any jobs to be had (the last recession) and we were going overdrawn with the bank, maybe I'm an idiot and I should have swallowed my pride and signed on sooner.
The welfare state should be a safety net for society, if you need it that's fine but it shouldn't be a conscious career choice. I know one person who chose a life on benefits, she copied her mother's example.
I have a knackered foot due to an industrial accident that is painful to stand or walk on, I've had to drop down to working part-time even though I'd rather work full time, I don't claim any benefits for it as I consider myself lucky enough that I can still work and we have just tightened our belts and cut out a lot of life's luxuries. I know there are people far worse off than me and in my opinion they are the ones that deserve the benefits.
A lot of this I put down to the way I was brought up, which is basically if you want something you work for it, if you don't have the money for it you do without.
