Main dealers again.

Got a Hyundai i40, done 20,000 miles, serviced last month, car has been perfect from new.
Last Friday, air bag warning light came on, I rang local dealer, they said that they would get Hyundai assist out to check it over, the AA turned up, and after a brief check and diagnostics he said that there was a problem with the passenger air bag circuit, hence the light being on.

I rung the dealers, and the earliest that they could look at it was Wednesday, I complained that that was not good enough, and basically got told it Would have to be Wednesday.

I dropped car off this morning at 8.00am., they rung me at 1.30pm, and stated that there is a fault, but they cant find it and they need the car for a week in order to find this fault.

On the paperwork, it states that it is an earth problem.
This earth problem has led to the following problems.

Air bag light on.
Passenger air bag light not working.
Seat belt warning light not working.
Seat belt not beeping, when unplugged.
Tyre pressure monitoring light always on.
Interior light taking ages to go out.
Stop start button, working but not lighting up.
Heated rear screen not working.

Now not being an expert, but there must be a clue as to why so many faults have appeared at the same time.

Car is going back in on Monday, so I will keep you informed.

that is probably par for the course these days, they are "technicians" now, they plug a computer in and it tells them the problem, if it dont tell them the problem they are stumped and have to get a specialist in.
cars are too complicated these days, thats why i like my 28year old MX5 and gave up repairing them a couple of years ago

I don’t agree cars are too complicated, I think the technicians don’t get enough training.

Anyone can plug a diagnostic machine in, it’s understanding what it tells you that’s the problem

I think the sum total of their skill set is basic servicing, brakes, wheel bearings and exhaust.
For electrical faults they get an auto electrician, gearbox problems replace the whole or send to a transmission specialist and God help them if it needs a new crankshaft!

I once had a fuel leak on a 6 week old Mondeo. Went to the dealers. They tried to fix it and caused one of the cylinder to be down on compression. They had to get the specialist in direct from Ford and it ended up with a new engine!
I got the car back 5 weeks later. (I only took it in for a fuel leak!)

Should have seen what VW did to my T5 wheel when they tried to get the locking wheel nut off (after finding the key was missing after buying it).

A few days to get it booked in isn't too bad.
Electrical faults can be a pig to find, had a car once that would cut out only when going around a left bend at a certain speed.......turned out to be a nicked wire where it went through the bulkhead in the loom, body twisted a bit and contact was lost.Another that would misfire but under no set conditions..........heater matrix leaking, water dripping into ecu and intermitantly shorting it out.i worked at a mazda main dealer, why take a gearbox apart when we'd only do one every couple of years, leave it to the guys that do it day in day out.

It carnt be that difficult for them to follow a wiring diagram to double check if all these are on a common earth surly

Some of the fault codes that code readers pick up, make fault finding easier, but the electronics are so complex that faults that don’t code, or throw up false codes, can be a nightmare to find. Try doing it before criticising those who are sorting out electronics dreamed up by people who give no thought to what happens if a wire comes loose or 5p component fails.

I know all about it from my brother and my own experience and I am not criticising any one I was nearly putting a point forward

Modern cars can be a pig when the electrics play up I really feel for the tech's, what seems simple is often not. We have a FullFat Ranger Rover that had start/stop issues at 6months old. fault codes were firing for modules etc but after swapping them out still the problem was there so it was a case of following the wires and something called Quiescent drain testing too as the small battery was always discharging. Took them weeks to find the issue including a Landrover tech coming to the dealer to help! Then Our Discovery 4 had issues with a single sensor at 18months old that made the dashboard light up like a Christmas tree and knock out all the terrain and gearbox gadgets took them ages to sort that too, it created a cascade fault as the dealer put it. You could say well they are LandRovers but we also have a BMW I3 and that came up with some errors it was like looking at the Matrix on the centre screen with all the codes, turned out to be a wiring harness.

Middle son was Final Assembly Body And Trim on the Jaguar XJ line. One completed XJ wouldn't start or failed the final check pre-start. Brought one of their expert techs in. Car was sitting around for the rest of the working week whilst he fault found. Rather like Keithski and R-D-R it was a trapped or nipped wire in an inaccessible location.

A common thread here seems to be that the components are reliable enough but the wiring harnesses can still let the magic smoke out from time to time.

Had the airbag light come on the other half's Nissan. I decided to diagnose it myself. Eliminated the seat connectors and circuitry, disconnected the passenger airbag circuitry and eliminated the front crash sensor circuitry. Light still came on intermittently so it had to be the driver airbag area. found that it was a squib ring contact fault. decided to let a garage do it as I didn't want to detonate the airbag and possibly remove my ugly phizog at the same time! I carefully explained what the fault was in writing and what I wanted done. If they had carried out my wishes it would have been cheaper for them instead of charging and changing things and wrongly diagnosing the fault. And modern cars are TOO complicated. Most drivers never use the gadgets or even know they exist. It all starts with good design. That is something sorely lacking in almost every item we now use. The designer knows how it works but not how it won't work. A good design means you can operate something without an instruction book. I have a Casio watch that was a present. It is so complicated that no one can work it, even with the book. I only wear it for half the year as I have to wait for BST to coincide with its time. Luckily I have another Casio that is easy to use. Don't get me started on the Neff cooker clock!

Have a friend who now has a citroen c4, before he bought it auto electrician turned up to diagnose all the multiple faults the car had and he said that the repair was going to cost more than the car was worth. Friend still bought the car knowing it had loads of faults. Turns out there was a lot of oily residue in the fuse box in the engine bay that was causing all the issues, a good clean out with brake cleaner and the faults all disappeared

One problem can lead to several fault codes.

Another reason not to buy a modern car as they are complete money pits! Luckily or unluckily depending on how you look at it you get the joys of throwing it back at the main dealers.

In recent times I've had the joys of not having brake pads fitted properly & a missing wheel bolt when using a couple of main dealers. They all seem to be pretty much useless! All reflective of how little they are willing to pay their staff. But they do have a nice flashy showroom with a coffee machine

sounds like whoever serviced it caused the fault in the first place need to be suggesting that to dealer

with that many faults it should be easy to fix, more than likely they all share the same earth point.
