Overhead welding on sill

I'm about to start welding an inner sill / floor pan and it requires some overhead welding.

I'm not keen on running a bead, is it ok to stitch?

I've used the same technique on over areas I've patched already to avoid panel distortion.

don't know if it's the aceptable way for MOT's any more.......too long outta the game but I stitch everything....even now...with the odd fiull bead at the joint ends.........
no better, no worse than the spot welds from the factory........but they do start with clean metal........but had a few new car panels that wern't spot welded prop from the factory.......
but from the outside who can tell........

I was told they only check the welding
If they have failed that part of the metal on the car

Stitches are just full welds that ain't joined in rusty crusty car terms.

I would not genrally expect to put in a long continuous bead overhead from the get go on most old car tin. But it would end up continuous

Isn't the "thin metal technique" the best way to do this overhead anyway ...

Id do the same continous joined up big tacks.
But I dont weld cars, i hate welding cars, Id suggest getting some one else to do it. But thats not constructive advice.

Continuous joined up big tacks are fine. I just recently welded up the rear end of a camper van. Outriggers. Rear sills and a load of other bits. It passed it's mot. Even got offered a job from the garage that done the MOT. Downside is I totally detest car repair welding. Only done the job as it was good cash and used all the guys welding equipment and four post ramp

By comparison to many Land rover are easy. Sure they often need a lot but that's the use and age as much as anything

As @spencer 427 said short tacks in a continous line its not easy getting long beads overhead on tin
I stich all the time my MOT guy i work for is happy with it
Check the tutorial in the mig section for thin metal
Little tip grind the shroud nozzel back till its level with the tip use a tadge more stick out up your gas just a little more
its a tack wait tack wait tack wait joined up,do an inch then move to another part of the panel,same there move round untill your all done,practice,it'll come

Normally floors are spot welded to the inner sill, can you plug weld the floor to the sill, that would be acceptable if the floor was previously spot welded. Any pics?

I done quite a bit to mine this year and whilst I thought at the time it was difficult. It's a walk in the park in terms of fabrication and access compared to what others have got up on here with their project repairs.

I havent been a land rover owner yet, though thinking about it. Ive welded a few, though, not to bad to be honest. Worst I ever tried was a 2cv, but t was mainly minis and escorts in my younger days.

If its up high and access is good its not so bad, but lying on your back, on axle stands no thanks.
