A friend handed in a few volumes of the above book by Arthur W Judge (it belonged to a garage on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow), looks like it is 1920's, some great illustrations:

I've got 4 volumes of that plus a volume of wiring diagrams. It was first published by Caxton in 1927, mine is the 1955 reprint.

No year marked on mine or mention of a reprint, so assume it is a 1927? There is a section on "Memorandum of agreement for hire and maintenance of car with chauffeur" and all illustrations are 1920's.

Have a look at the bottom of the last pages in each volume, sometimes there is an indication of the year of the print run, eg 5/1925/1000 which could mean part of a run of 1000 copies in May 1925.

the modern motor engineer is no longer there called motor technicians nowhalf of them couldn't strip a motor and rebuild it . having said that theres not much you can do to modern motors anyhow. there throw away at high milage

Though at a time when motor engineers used lathes and scraped bearings...never mind when "the making of new pistons..... is a job which any modern motor workshop or garage should be able to undertake".....I may pop round to quickfit and see what they can do

dont bother most new engines u cant buy oversize pistons or rebore them

In fairness, there's a good reason for that. Titanium nitride coatings are harder than a Govan doorman so they'll do 100k miles and still have the original honing marks in the barrel. Same for piston coatings.

Here I am, brain the size of a planet and they ask me to pump up the tyres. Call that job satisfaction? ‘Cos I don’t.

yep and if you bend a valve and dent the piston its game over for the full engine just happened to my mates transit connect with 60 thousand miles on the clock

I used to have an AA book from the 70’s and that included stripping the head and decoking.

It also had instructions for punching out a shattered windscreen to maintain vision until you could pull over and unroll your temporary stick on one

In the days of hardened screens, I had 6 or 7 go. One was from a half brick thrown from a twin wheeled truck. It had got stuck between the tyres and chose that moment to escape. Went clean through my mini, between us. Caught my attention.

Not seen thos books before, look a good read.

After a few hundred miles - check tightness of nuts & bolts

For the 1st 1000 miles try to avoid many short journeys, fewer longer ones are better

Instructions on doing a decoke, after 1st 2500 miles, then between 5000 & 8000 miles

Check engine oil every 250 miles, changed every 1500 miles, clean sump out every 10,000 miles
