We have loads of those in the Dee and Mersey estuaries they are the ones with no eyes and noses, I believe.
they dont seem to last long on the streets though...I didnt know they were electrically competent???

My boss is into high-end hi fi and has recently bought a ridiculously-priced 2nd hand mains cable.
I think it was up on eBay for £750 BIN and he made an offer of £450 which was accepted.
He reckons he’s spent over £20k on his system as it stands and everything is 2nd hand!
New he reckons it would have cost him over £100k!!
I’ve just spent £120 on a gorgeous pair of Mission 752s and they’re without doubt the best sounding speakers I’ve ever heard, he can stick his Lumley References where the sun don’t shine.

I'm rather fond of my £70 (in 1985, chunk of money for me back then) 1970's Bowers & Wilkins DM2's - out of a BBC monitoring suite so just painted white, no fancy veneers, just an extra bottom octave thanks to the transmission lines - and you only realise they're loud when people look at you and say

It’s his money to do what he wants with but it annoys me that he rubbishes cheaper kit as it couldn’t possibly sound as good as his does as it costs a fraction of the price.
He’s just spent £800 having a new laser put in his CD player... my whole system didn’t cost me £800!

My system is to my ears pretty good and the firm just used CAT7 cables in the walls to join things together which is recommended by the manufacturer. Where I have been bitten in the past is cheapo HDMI cables, I was having loads of issues with HDCP issues (copyright warnings) I moved to half decent cables and it all went away.

Oh yeah can totally taste the difference. I'm definitely not convincing myself I can tell the difference because I got sold an expensive placebo for a problem that doesn't exist.

Is anyone gonna check their cable is actually iridium? You could sell any old cable and just pretend it's made of the rarest metals in the earths crust, no one's gonna cut their brand new £300 cable open and put it in an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.
Maybe use 4mm HO7RN-f so it feels a bit more skookum.

When I worked for ICL in the 1970s their mainframes were powered from motor-alternators, they were just that, a 3 phase alternator driven by a 3 phase motor.

One of the best systems I ever heard was in the mid-70s when I was round a customer's house and he played something on it for me. He was an older chap and had lost his vision, so he reckoned one of the best things to spend his money on was a good quality sound system. Now, at the time, I was in no way an audiophile, but I could certainly tell good from bad, and that £3K B&O setup sounded awesome to me. The speakers were upward-firing with a dispersal cone, so I could stand almost anywhere in the room and get a full stereo effect.
Fast-forward 20 years and I acquired a pair of Leak 3080s, which I thought sounded pretty good, but their age caught up with them and they soon became in need of re-coning, but the cost of doing it was too high, so they languished in the store area for nearly 20 years. A few years ago I rebuilt them with fairly cheap drivers, paying as much attention as was feasible to the matching characteristics as I could. I kept the original x-overs, as they were fine. What I like about them is the sheer size - they're totally in-yer-face and spit in the eye of the bookshelf speaker generation. Even better, is they only need 80W to achieve max output. I couldn't sit in the same room with these turned right up.
Given that my hearing isn't as good as it was when I first heard that B&O setup, the system I've got sounds ok to me - I rattle the windows with it when I'm in the mood, and it's a pretty good outfit for movie soundtracks.
I doubt the whole thing cost me more than a couple of hundred quid for reasonable happiness.
Oh, and my interconnects are simply decent quality speaker wire, none of this oxygen-free or rhodium / iridium-plated guff. I did stretch a point and bought some gold-plated phono plugs, as I did find the normal plugs tended to get a bit of corrosion on them when left undisturbed for ages, leading to some odd things happening.

I bought my Mission 752s on EBay a couple of weeks ago and when they arrived one of the tweeters wasn’t working properly so I rang the seller up and arranged to send them back for a refund.
I noticed that when I thumped the top of the cabinet it briefly worked so thought I’d do some investigating.
It turned out to be two components on the Xover had come adrift during transit and were touching each other.
Needless to say I’m glad I never sent them back.

I’m not going to lie, my Wharfedale Amber speakers are not UK market spec and cost me £500, along with £800 for the amp. At the time I had a competition winning SQ system in my car that was built on a budget of sorts....
Now the acid test for me is listening to someone like Adele, on her 21 album I could hear various bits, like her being counted in on one track, and on Someone like you she steps up to the mic and breathes in. Only other thing I’ve heard that on is my very spendy headphones
But would you hear more spending 10 or 1000 times what I did? Very much doubt it and it’s one of those hobbies where people get obsessed with nuances and tiny details, Rebecca Pidgeon is often cited as an SQ “test” as it’s full of bits like on the Adele album, however I don’t like her music and the “extras” feel a little deliberate at times
I do value sound quality over volume, I will be putting a system in the Disco when I choose some speakers, I’ve decided against a DSP so using an old school alpine crossover and amps which does limit my choice a bit
