Faulty battery terminal fix ideas

Ok the batteries are all good apart from one. I have tracked the fault to the positive terminal if I put a bit of pressure on said terminal the battery registers and starts charging. So question is how are the terminals connected inside the battery.

Normally lead soldered onto the plates.

But some batteries like that may have a fusible link to prevent damage.
But the plastic tops are frequency welded to the side case.

Give it a gentle tap with a soft faced hammer to see if it secures the connection, yes I know its the small screwdriver, big hammer approach, but there's not much more you can do as the plastic covers are welded closed. Even if you can get it open (which isn't too difficult) you got the problem with the electrolyte gel containing acid.

In my opinion if the hammer trick don't work, chuck it away, not worth the hassle

Speaking from experience of MEWP batteries the best way, is to recycle it after buying a replacement. The internal connection has an intermittent connection, it's ********.

If it's going to get thrown away, might be worth running a big self tapping screw down the terminal.

I have no idea if that might work

Parm I twisted it with some pliers and it is charging now. I don't want to throw them away I can cut the top of if need be or even use a hole cutter it's only to be used on electric fencing

If it just needs pushing down to make it work, can you come up with some sort of clamp made out of a non conductive material ?

was just going to say a clamp or ratchet strap around it to hold it down

It does work, but care is needed not to spread the internal post onto adjacent plates inside.

If it just needs pushing down to make it work, can you come up with some sort of clamp made out of a non conductive material ?

More you push down, more you distort the connecting plate.

This battery could be a hydrogen oxygen explosion waiting to happen. All it would take would be a bit of overcharge, to fill the headspace above the cell nearest the terminal with the two gases, then connect to a load and create a spark as the intermittent contact made or broke, and BOOM!!! Bits of battery casing and strong sulphuric acid everywhere. It's not worth it. Trust me, it happened at work a couple of years ago, and a right mess, it made!

The internal link from the battery plates to the external post has a fracture causing the intermittent contact/connection, basically the battery is scrap. There no way to repair it unless you melt it down and start again.

cut it open and crimp or solder perhaps
