Shop press bottle jack size?????

Hi all i got a load of off cut steel from a scrapper mate of mine and i have made a press with what was there.

i am trying to figure out the best size bottle jack to use, im thinking of getting a 50ton one of ebay for £47.00 because it comes with a thick solid base plate but im not sure if it could just tear the press apart specifically the holes its legs are 90x90 box 6mm wall, 25mm solid pins.

i still have to build a safety cage for the front and get some solid steel for the ram.

i have reinforced the c channel what you press on and also the c channel on the top i have welded plates in the top and also a thick plate were the jack will be pressing.

the weakest point will be the holes? will they hold upto a 50ton jack which with it been an ebay jobby may not actually be as powerful as a 50ton.

i have kept enough room so if it does start to wear the holes i can weld so 10mm thick washers onto every hole this will make it 16mm thick

Very nicely made, although I think the top channel will start to bow with that jack. I bent 4x2 U channel with a 10ton Portapower on a homemade press frame. Have you looked at the air over hydraulic jacks?

never thought of that bowing i though more the holes would get mangled i have welded plates on the inside of the c channel i have attached a pic and drawn them in red were they are

if it does start to bow i could weld so corner plates in to tie it into the leg more

checked the air jacks out but they were more money, i didnt want the 50 ton but its got a solid base were the 32 and below are all thin plate type also its not a quality brand so i bet it wouldnt even lift 50 ton so thats another reason as well says 50 ton but really its only 30

i would use the 50 ton one like you intended, just be carefull and observe whats going on around you when youre applying pressure.
i have a homemade 10 ton press and very rarely do i use full pressure, if it did then i would assume somethings wrong as all my pressing needs are automotive.

just seem to make more sense buying the larger jack i do think that the frame maybe more suited for a 20/30ton but i think its was £10.00 more for the 50

thats a beast of a press, i have made mine out of offcuts i have no use for it at the minute but i have been reading about these bottle jacks and this 50ton i have bought weights 19kg others like the kennedy 50ton weights 34kg i do know the one i have bought is a cheapo £47.00 so hopefully worst case i just have to put another set of springs on it dont want to have to build a counter balance system for it

I used a murex tradesmig, I think the model is a 250/3, can't be sure from memory. Used 1mm wire. I think I got a bit carried away with the building of that press but I enjoyed it.

That must be why your welds look thicker and better maybe not best way to describe but it looks like it flowed easier and was hotter than mine I had to work mine abit but that must be because I was running 0.8 thats the max mine does its the r tech 180mig I'm no professional but I assume thats why corect me if I'm wrong though im still learning

The flange thickness on that channel is 12mm, if memory serves. I had the welder flat out and i still felt like I needed more penitration. That may be down to the fact that my gas is argo shield light, I have since switched to argo shield universal.

i get the jack tomorrow so im hoping that i dont tear it apart with a 50ton lol, im thinking of upgrading my welder to a 250amp i think thats the largest on single phase so when i do have projects were its a little thick steel it shouldnt be a problem i just felt that i had to work it a little with my welder were yours seems to of layed some even hot beads, i have only ever used my inverter welder but id love to know if there is a difference between an old transformer style to the new inverter type i think your will be a transformer machine im pretty positive that my machine starts of full of power then it feels like it slowly loses some real hard to explain what i mean dont know if thats anything to do with the type of welder it is or what

That sir is a very nice press, have you considered using a ram and hydraulic powerpack? Can all be had secondhand and probably for less than the cost of a jack, also no need for return spring if you fit a spool valve. Just thoughts.

i get the bottle jack tomorrow I ended up getting the 50ton of eBay the one I posted a pic of hopefully it doesnt crush the frame lol
