Lifting sling .. Only 1 use?

When we get a bundle of steel at work,sometimes they come with lifting straps on them so we end up with 100s of the things,

Asked my manager why we throw them away, he said theyre only supposed to be used once, why is that?

Ive taken a few myself to use for lifting engines ect

I think the problem could be you don't get the test certificate that belongs to the sling, they are so cheap to buy, it has become a disposable item.

Saying that I've also got a few freebies here.

If you have the straps attached to the load and they remain in place you can avoid having anyone climbing on to the lorry to connect up a crane for lifting.
This is advantageous from a safety point of view.

Buying that sling on it's own retail will cost £10-20ish.
Buying thousands in bulk will be cheaper.

If you make them "single use" then you don't have any costs of keeping an inventory and getting them regularly inspected - all part of LOLER. (Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations)

I can get them singuliarly for about £3-00 incl vat, if I was buying by the thousand 70p each?

Not the regulation or the regulator.

It is the way people interpret the regs and guidance.

Falls from height are a known danger. It is generally possible to avoid climbing onto a lorry to unload it. Like use a forklift to handle the load or have lifting slings that can be connected to a crane from ground level.

Most of the one use slings i have come across are a lot lighter and less hard wearing than a comparable rated standard sling.

Its the same for builders bags and fertilizer bags i ilways thought it was that they cannot guarantee fibres wont be damaged and fatigued
Especially if chocking steel
The sharp 90 degree turn will de rate a sling anyway
Its quite a substantial de rate aswell and a knot in a sling can be upto 90%

I once did as job for a guy who imported and sold builders 1 ton single use bags. he paid 3 quid each for them and sold them for a fiver to builders merchants . once they were lifted by a crane on site that was it. it wasn't allowed to be lifted again .insurance void and in deep dodo if they got caught

All of the big contractors require bundles pre-wrapped with those single use slings. There's nothing wrong with using them again no different to any other sling just that making them single use is a concession for not having them on the loler register. I always grab a handful when I can, we use them for dragging the digger attachments on and off the trailers.

we have loads at wok but they get inspected every 6 months along with all our other lifting equipment, i assume it doesnt cost a massive amount as the guys are already there checking the cranes, hoists etc but we use slings for years without any problems.

I was speaking to a guy who works on the railways yesterday. Apparently , they are only allowed to use the rotabroach cutter once and they have to replace it (including pin) for each and every hole they drill to ensure the hole is clean and round. Madness. Guess that's one reason rail fares are so high
