Maybe. The condition they’re kept in is appalling and it wouldn’t surprise me.

The triumph is push button operated on the headstock to start the power then the apron control lever does f/n/r, unlike the smaller ones like the bantam which the apron controls the on/off switch.

A new sign has appeared in the metal room - ‘ask the technician BEFORE changing chucks’. I assume some kind of incident occurred...

Aye, but I don't recall the Seller having a lathe-specific one, and the chuck will still take delight in grabbing an unwary loose sleeve etc and inflict more than enough damage.
With my medical condition I have to be careful to avoid significant cuts etc on account of susceptibility to infection and 'thinned' blood which doesn't clot readily.

I was going to take these parts in to the blaster but thought better of it as the centre is machined... plus I can do these at home. The blaster just makes me lazy!

The previous owner and their magic paintbrush have been at it again, here with the two internal iron discs which hold the stones in place. I must say these are really nice machined iron, keyway cut and all. Makes the ones on the Wolf look very, very flimsy!

So all that paint was scraped off with the chisel, then wire brushed until we arrived back at bare metal

By comparison to the other side the underside really wasn't that bad - probably because the phantom paintbrush couldn't get to it! I still gave them a whirl on the wire brush though as it's something I'm only ever going to do once. Afterwards I wiped them down in oil to stop the rust coming back immediately.

And that is that for today. More updates soon, more parts to take in tomorrow - some really fiddly stuff like the switchgear box and the water reservoir.

Man today was such a mission - the power box was such a pain to get clean! I think I must have easily spent half an hour on just the lid, taking it out and scoring all along every line with a knife then back in the cabinet for round two!

So here it is, fresh from the blaster

And then I gave it a go on the wire brushing machine

It looks nice from a distance but the writing is a bit poorly cast and will benefit from a coat of paint. It got a wash of turps and then a coat of etch primer

I also took the retaining nuts (brass) and the pins which look to be ground down nails! I have to say they came up lovely, such attention to detail for an industrial machine

You can see the back bit still needs stripping.

And then I went to an electrical shop who said they'd never heard of 16a plugs and said I must have gotten confused with 15a. Err no... Second shop were only too eager to help and a socket was duly purchased

So I will clean the box fully, then investigate how I mount this to the machine.

I also did the lid of the reservoir today. Here's a shot from a few days ago when I laid out all the 'small' bits I needed doing

As you can see the lid was very rusty, but the sandblaster made short work of that. Then I primed it.

And I just painted it now with the first coat of green - it must be a very long time since it looked like this.

Thank you for your concern - you're right, that would be really dangerous but that's not what I've got it for

Today I sandblasted the box, this went really well after I'd scored all the nooks with a craft knife, a good tip if you want it done quickly.

Then over to the metal shop to widen the hole with a Dremel. Offset jaw vice for the spotters out there.

Then a bit of minor surgery with the socket, and the thing was fitted to the box

So with the lid on it looks like this

It will look better on the machine obviously. I also sandblasted the reservoir today - it took ages. It was awkward to spray the gun into and there was something in there like black almost plastic or rubber? Very difficult to shift but I got it out and spray galved it.

More progress

I thought I had a full day of classes today but somehow a two hour gap appeared between studio and life drawing. I've got a few parts in my studio which are awaiting blasting so I took one down to the industrial design block - this crap covered lump

The motor bolts onto it and two tension bolts sort of lever it to tighten/slacken the belt. It was very easy to clean because the monkeys hadn't been able to paint much of it, so I was just blasting off original Harrison grey, what was left of it anyhow

It came up really nicely. A quick turn on the wire wheel got it looking even better

Then over to the spray booth for a coat of etch primer

And I've actually just painted it in grey, but I'll get a pic later as it's drying in the garage along with these pretties

The tin cone for the water-fed wheel, and the reservoir itself has gained an internal coat of green. It will need one more, then we can play with refitting the tap and putting some water through it

All in all a very productive day, and only three more parts which need abrasive blasting. Really the only thing holding me back now is re-applying the filler and getting the main casting sorted.

Motor mount is in primer - bolts are clean, note the nice chamfered edge washers

And up top, bar refitted and grub screw put back in. This is very pleasing as the entire assembly was smothered paint when I took delivery of it

I would advise you to avoid using the wire wheel after blasting. It tends to polish the metal & the paint won't bond as well as it does to the blasted surface.

Drum roll please for the largest bit of cast put through the blaster yet, the right hand guard.

I’m dead pleased this is now safe at home as it’s really thin cast iron and I’m nervous about cracking it by dropping etc during transportation. It rings beautifully! I would never have been able to do such a good job as the blaster has done, it ate away the layers - the bulge was useful for getting the gun inside.

Only two more bits to go now, the top guard for this side and the big trough for the other side. I’ve got tomorrow off so I might have a play reassembling it all and see how it spins with the new belt and pulley. Exciting times
