Some shots from today’s rebuilding session. In hindsight I should have put the motor from the drill on so I could test it, but I didn’t think. The motor tensions really well now and the bar swivels great, big improvement in this area.
Had to clean up the bushes and the spindle with a little light filing to bring the dia back to 1”, lots of damage from the previous pulley, I think the grub screw was loose and has scored all around slipping as it went. Funny that the machine was sold ‘in good working order’ - when I see those words I factor in gremlins!
You can’t actually see any of the green in the inside of the water fed wheel which is great, not spoiling the aesthetic of the rest of the machine.

Not my best work on the spray primer but oh well. Today saw a test of the blaster on aluminium which fared well I felt. I did it on this, the front trough and parts shelf - seems to have gone well but the cast is very pitted inside, have they been storing mercury in here?
I’ll hit it with a coat of grey tonight and see how it looks. Given it’s likely to chip anyway I’m not sure filler is worth it on this part for what is just relatively minor imperfections, and the inside will be painted green which will disguise the pitting too.

Well I tried and failed to get the end grille done in one sitting. They are massive and combined with the blaster packing in, I only really got the back done plus about 20% of the front. Still, it came up good and that’s the main thing. I was going to take it home this weekend and paint it but tbh I will wait. I’m etch priming but I feel a run over with filler primer will benefit the front greatly. I can do this all at uni with the spray booth which is handy - great lighting and extraction too. Anyway, here’s a pic of the recently repainted interior. Any progress is good

I decided to go for grey inside the front trough. I was originally going to do green like on the other ‘internal’ bits but I felt the front could become a bit of a circus with all the colours - there is already black and red and silver as well as the grey of the machine, and I felt that one more would just look wrong.

Thing is you actually can’t see the green on the insides of the wheel covers once the stones are back in - I’ve checked. Thanks for your kind words, I love putting on the badge for a bit of a confidence boost!

No, but you'd know......
Trust me in an ideal world the inside would be sandblasted, primed and painted green, it is a right old state in there but I cleaned as best I could with the wire brush.
I do the projects to the best of my ability at any time. Cost comes into it too. I’m broke pretty much all the time and any money goes towards the machines.
Having free access to the blaster is beyond a dream come true! I’ve got some aluminium billets for this project to machine too - covers for the bolts which run through the guards to protect the threads from clag and dust, and having access to the lathes is super handy (note to self, must save for parts for my own lathe!).
The only hurdle now is the filler layer and the electrics - sorting the mounting of the power box and plug and buying the vfd. The filler I’m just putting off because I'm lazy and it’s a faff of a job, but worth it on these very rough castings. One step at a time though...

Aye I have thought about plastic but I do like the bulletproof character of the machine and it seems a shame to do put plastic on it! Only when absolutely necessary like the plug

Spent another hour today pondering life, existence, the future and space...
...all to the sound of a heavy hiss from the sandblaster! Yes, it's boring work but just look at these results!
I didn't get absolutely everything but it's smooth, that's the main thing. There are some minor casting defects which I will fill, sand, then etch prime and on top of that probably give a coat of filler-primer to soften everything out before I move onto topcoat.
Side by side the painted one doesn't actually look that bad, but it's the way it's been painted that's the problem. The underside of the grilles are still green whereas the top ones are heavy grey, and the paint has formed large drips. It just has to go.
This brings the number of parts yet to be sandblasted to a mere three (and one of them is really small!)

Put the etch primer onto the grille today and prepared it for the filler primer which I will buy tomorrow. It’s quite good fun especially with the aluminium as high points can easily be filed down. Given the date of manufacture (1955) it’s likely that this aluminium was once flying high over the skies of Europe.
Once it’s all done I’ll run another coat of etch primer for the newly uncovered patches, then leave it for the night.

If your alloy castings have a foundry stamp and number you may find records of the castings. They may hint of the source of the metals.
The Valve manufacture Hatersey Heaton, they had a factory in the 80's near me, used to recycle MOD surplus metals. They had to keep records of the metal source.
They did a range of "German Valves" made from salvage German materials right up to 1970's.
When I was a nipper the schools used to take the metal working class to the factory. A few doors up from were I grew up was someone who worked there, I spent many an hour listening to his experience's.

I bought filler primer to smooth off the rest of the job, and a couple of coats later it looked good. I also decided to file the bolt heads flat and take them though the sandpaper grades til I could unleash the autosol on them. Shiny shiny!
Then today I painted the grille with the first of two coats of topcoat. Tedious is not the word... this thing saps your will to live! So many crevices and rows to do. It looks good though, and that’s the main thing. I even managed to find some sunshine to let it dry for the afternoon

The early ones have grilles like mine, the later ones have panels. Personally I think the grilles give the machine a lot of character and the lines are very pleasing to the eye. A complete nuisance to prep for paint, though. I've got the other side to go and I'm not looking forward to it

Because I own only three pairs of shoes - the gumboots, my combat boots and a pair of dress shoes for special occasions. The gumboots are so easy and very comfortable! Redbands they're called, order a pair - you won't be disappointed. I got my dad a pair of the toe cap ones free from a job (worn once by a guy and never picked up - they were going to throw them in the skip) and he's made up with them, loves them.
