Leather Sand Bag Protype

had some off cuts of leather from an upholstery project so decided to make a little sand bag, size is limited by the size of off cuts. Stitched together with my mums industrial sewing machine, I didn’t have the right needles, it was struggling a little. Sewed in some Velcro to close it up at the sand adding opening.

This is a prototype as I’m planning to build a bigger one. I haven’t used this yet but have a way of making it better and also access to some thicker leather, may have to stich the old fashioned way as it may not go through the sewing machine

I’ve proved the concept though

Had a load of small ones I made out of canvas years back. Used em to hold kites down in my buggying days.

I needed one for summat I was doing and thought 'leather' n 'sand' I have kiln dried and a welding glove and a cable tie in a second or two I had a five finger sand bag,
HAHA it stayed in there for ages actually and I found a few uses for it.

This is good quality thick leather

I’ve got some more leather comming and it’s much thicker, may not go thro the sewing machine but I now know how to deal with it.

You know how it goes, I’ve got done free material so might as well turn into a project

I’ve never had an apron for anything but recently I’ve been thinking I need one. Gonna start off with a kitchen apron first though. It won’t be made of leather, people may talk

Buy scrap lead.
Melt on stove (don't breathe fumes!)

Trickle into a bucket of water.

Seriously though - steel shot is used in sandblasting.
Or you can buy steel bbs.

Sand works well and if it's one you can hold sand is going to be a better choice. Sand just needs replacing after a while if used a lot.

Thickest leather you can get is called tooling leather but I think that's way too thick for you. Perhaps a shoulder?

My wife banned me from using her machine for sewing stuff that was too heavy so I bought my own, £5 from flea market. Leather point needles help but it still will not sew really thick stuff like 3mm veg tanned leather. I do that with a 1mm drill in the pillar drill then sew it by hand with two needles one from each side and some twine instead of cotton. I get leather from the Identity store in Matlock, it's fairly local for me.

Or a Scuba shop. Lead shot are used in some weight belts.

Nice little bag, a contrast to a friends bag that is 120 kg
