Ok when i sort the processor out the last thing is the SSD.

Looking at PC world they seem around 90quid for a 250gig but i thought they were that two years ago.

Anything on ebay worth getting. I think i have a 120 samsung on my current build but i find it fills it up very quickly with files i cant see to delete.

What do you need to make a media server PC.

The only experience i have with servers is Apache and some i used to run as file servers...cant remember the names though now..

For me. Install main plex program on the pc and point it to my files.
install the app on the firestick tada.
Will work over lan and wan apparently so could watch away from home.

Run the os and most important programs on the sd run the rest off of a standard hdd.
Make the most of the speed of an ssd to speed up the system without clogging it up with junk.

I have a home media server made by HP, I got it about 3 years ago while on offer not sure but i think £150 bare and i think i added 4 4TB drives but set on mirror just to keep data safer

Ours doesn't look so posh - cobbled together with bits and pieces - we have about 40 TB of storage though - more than Netflicks lol. Wasted on me - I barely watch TV - no time. I am going through all the old Dad's Armys having said that - one every other day!

Configuration mainly. A reasonably powerful CPU - loads of memory - and 12 drives! Then a Raspberry Pi connected to the TV to make it more user friendly.
On our computers though we just browse to what we want using explorer or a command line.

Remember most desktop PCs can be run as a server - it is gaming that needs the most powerful PCs!

The power consumption is very low so it is on 24/7, It never gets used as a computer just to store on

Same here - I make sure I buy drives that will sleep - saves on power and extends the life considerably.

I have server rated seagate drives as i was told big non server types would die fast

Slower spin = longer life
No good for system drives of course!

Crystal disk info is very good for checking the health of a drive.

I think you can get a 480Gig for about £130.

The prices haven't really come down at all in a few years now for SSD drives - hopefully won't be long though.

Needed a second 480Gig to use as a cloned backup so just had to splash out on one.

my brother is the very opposite - he only wants films in the highest definition possible. Average size about 40gig! Also my drone videos are 4k - take up so much space!

Coincidentally, I was reading up the Intel motherboards of that era this afternoon, as I've got a couple of Q35 boards that I picked up for peanuts.
One is sitting right now, happily running a 2.8Ghz Quad core and four Gigs with an SSD HD and is probably running better than its makers ever thought it would. It's not a slouch even dealing with modern loads. I'd not use it as a gaming board, but for general browsing and desktop work it's fine.
