I once baby sat a goldfish for a pal, came down one morning to find the damned floating, lifeless. It crossed my mind to try replacing it & hoping they'd not notice, but did the honourable thing & 'fessed up.

His response? "Thank Christ, I thought it'd never die".

Makes you wonder if any previous fish-sitters had just replaced it & not confessed.

Do most pubs etc have deals with scrap merchants for their aluminium cans?

Filtering old chip fat oil from fish shops etc for bio-diesel.

I am thinking of the same line with goldfish, reckon I can get 200 goldfish bowls in the garage, this time next year I will be a millionaire.

Some friends of mine do the dog thing. You have to be licensed by the Council.

Like the goldfish idea, could be interesting combining it with looking after cats.

@ukracer How about making clocks? Buy a load of cheap battery movements from the Land of Everything and you can use almost anything for the dial....wood slabs, steel/ali off-cuts etc, etc.

List them on Guntree [free and generally local, unlike eBay where the fees will rob you ], local free papers, take to craft fares, car boots - the world is limited only by your imagination as far as the design is concerned.

I was recently looking at 2 old pistons in the garage and thinking letting them go for a fiver or a tenner each and stumbled over a pinterest page of piston desk clocks. I managed to find an inset around the same dimension as the crank bearing (43mm) for £6 on the bay and the completed clock seems to sell for around £30-£40. Pick up a few used pistons and clock insets and double your money.
