We have two combis and both are reliable. Regarding the hot water, it is mains pressure so my shower is steaming hot and powerful and we have sized it so we can have two showers at the same time. Fills a bath in no time and there is no way you could sit in it without adding cold water. You're not having to heat a tank with electric so is cheaper and less wasteful and you don't run out of hot water with a combi also.

I'll agree with you on most of that, the shower we had on a combi was ace, far better than an electric, we had a thermostatic mixer so if someone turned on a cold tap you didn't get scalded. Mind you we had problems every summer when the water board would turn down the pressure to discourage people from using sprinklers but they still would so the combi wouldn't fire up due to low mains pressure. Had to have a shower late at night after all the garden watering had been done by the neighbours.

Obviously your combi is bigger than the one we had since we couldn't fill a bath from it. The flow was either too cold or too slow.

I don't heat my tank with electric, I use the conventional boiler but have an immersion as backup, but I'll agree that you don't
run out of hot water with a combi apart from when it breaks down.

Still wouldn't ever have one again though.

How much would a load like that cost and how far do you travel?

I would agree with this for use in an open fire but these big fan assisted boilers can take about a cube of chogs , this can take a good few days to burn through so it basically dries all the wood as it goes. The guys I know with this type of incinerator boiler burn anything and have been for many years.

I was offered a full logging artic full of wood straight out the forest for 900 a couple of weeks ago, its only a couple of miles so transport costs minimal, storing not a problem, but cutting and splitting.......is hard graft. Maybe if my current source drys up.

My system is closed loop for heating from the heat store tank, as is the loop from the boiler. The loop from the log burner back boiler is open, basically the back boiler heats 1 radiator and a plate exchanger in an open pumped circuit. Other side of exchanger into the heat store is a pumped loop to the heat store.

We also have an aditional coil currently unused that was to accept heat from an rhi pellet boiler but left it too long to make it worth while

Finally got round to getting a quote for a new oil fired central heating system which includes:

Worcester Bosch heatslave 2 boiler
10 panel radiators
New oil tank
All new piping

He’s come back with £11,700. Going to get another plumber around for comparison, my eyes were on stalks at first but I suppose it’s a lot of work. Do you think that’s a fair price?

I would go down the 2nd hand route. I was thinking of a system for our offices - I was planning on about £3k!

I wouldn't touch LPG with a barge pole, your tied to whoever installed the tank so if (or should that be when?) they put up their prices you either pay or go cold.

Au contraire. The tank supplier can only hold you to contract for two years. After that you can put the business wherever you wish.

Some nice cast rads £30 each ish

My old man is busy hemmoraging money on quotes like these. I spoke to him on the phone last night, and he told me about the new log burner that they had chosen.

He told me what it was, and how much. I had the laptop on so I tapped it into Google shopping (I mean, the quickest, laziest price check possible) and got a delivered to his door price of £215 less.

The thing is, I know from a lifetime of experience, that, whilst you can lead a horse to water... He will still buy from whatever shop he met the "very knowledgeable" shiny salesman in.

Sorry that quote cheered me up , as i took so long to install the boiler the wife said why not pay someone to do it.

I installed my heatslave 2, tank 1000L (full) and a lot of fittings cost a little over €4000.

Should you be using PEX on Rayburn system? Our Rayburn used to get so hot the water would boil and we would have to run taps to cool it down!

Getting a few more plumbers round to see what they can do. Will probably end up getting all the bits myself. Does the trade tend to pay full whack for boilers? The heatslave 2 is £2.3k+ on its own!

I don't really know much about oil burners, except everyone's getting rid of theirs over here.

My parents got rid of their wood/oil combi boiler recently, got 150€ for it. They replaced it with with a heatpump (NIBE air to water), they heat their house with hydronic radiators, which is the norm here, though radiant floor heating is taking over. They are very happy with the heat pump, uses very little electricity, and they also got a small wood stove.

I think a heat pump like this would be a good way to go, not as efficient as the ground heat exchange models, but cheaper to install and in the UK it doesn't get that cold so COP will be high.
