So the place I got the slip guages and Diaform attachment from had a bench full of machining stuff, mainly from use on J&S Grinders. Made an offer for the whole bench's contents and picked it up yesterday. Currently testing the air suspension in the back of the Landy as it weighs a tonne

A lot of old/worn out mic's and bits and bobs but some really nice stuff as well including:

Some form of grinding attachment which I hope to repurpose on my Clarkson for drill/cutter grinding

Loads of other stuff I haven't photographed as its still buried in the car, but includes various angle plates, angle box's, original J&S ZF mag chuck, J&S Knife Edge wheel balancing unit, couple of smaller mag chucks including one with a tilting plate, various indicator stands and surface gauges and a big cylindrical thing still in its wax which I am hoping is, or could be used as a cylindrical square.....

SO in others words a load of stuff I will probably never use but couldn't see get weighed in..... may have to experiment with mag chucks as workholding devices.........

Well, this isn't engineering related and it wasn't me but my lad who acquired this. His mate asked him if he could drop this Peavey Milestone bass up the tip as he had no car and the electrics had packed up! He fetched it home, strings came off and got boiled as I had no spare bass strings here, 1 x dodgy connection at the jack and some IPA through the volume pot after it measured open circuit, a good clean and polish, scrubbed the neck and treated it to some Dunlop lemon oil then some fast fret and it really does play nicely.

if was me and its worth a fair bit give him a pack of beers just so theres no hard feeling bean there and done this before heard from the grape vine through a few mates that he was miffed that i had took it and fixed it so i could profit from him i was helping out took a fair bit down the tip for him and kept one item and fixed it

went and spoke to him said sorry but as its was thrown away just thought he would not have been bothered i then offered to return the item in question for the cost of the part that it cost to fix it no was the reply do want it just would have nice to have been asked before taking

not a long story but at the end i went and bought a few beers and said its for the item he said dont worry all under the brigde and we had a few beers over a chat that night end of i always ask if i want any thing is it ok if i have it all the time i get back yea "if theres any thing there take it or it wil go in landfill it no use to me"

What's the purpose of that? Simply cleaning, or for another purpose/outcome?

Just to rid the strings of ingrained sweat and dirt off your hands. The fret board was ingrained with a lot of gunk along the fret wires so the strings will also have some grease and crud in them. In all honesty they sound lovely and ring when plucked so they were maybe fairly new but it doesn't hurt to ensure they're clean. Obviously no substitute for new strings.

As you can see I have been acquiring some weights. Well today I can explain why.

My dad had needed to weigh out gold silver tin etc for his job. He had a set of the Grey box and the wooden box weights.

He also had a set of Jocmemtp scales and weights set up at home.
Sadly after his passing they were sold, families what can I say.

Well a good friend of mine found a set in a Tel Aviv flea market. Well she would, she lives there.

I joked and said I would like them.
I have learnt a lesson today. Dana will like to surprize me.

This arrived in the last hour.

And.
This matching set of weights.

The glass box to cover the scales is with out glass and has bean slightly damaged in transit.

But who cares.

Both are from 1963 all I have to is find some thin glass and attach the plumb bob weight.

In all fairness when he was asked to dump the bass, my lad did ask if he could take it home. The lad knows I have built and refurbished a few guitars over the years but I will get him a few beers as a thank you.

I have seen a set of scales like this before that belonged to jeweller and he had some small stones by them, maybe there is a good reason? but nothing springs to mind.

Perhaps they're of known weight and fall between the range afforded by the other weights, although there are some pretty small ones in that set.

for scraching the gold on to test ? see if its 9ct or 18 ? just a guess

that's what a tradition load stone was for.

but I have an answer on the stones in my case. Other stones are available and may have other use.

My two stones are from Dana, my friend, she added them for the following reasons.
1. to confuse me and give me extra work. I quote; "you have time on your hands as you are not working"

2. They are pretty and she knows Mini me likes semi precious stones.

3. More stuff to unwrap, thus giving me more bubble wrap. Yes, she is almost as evil as me.

4. She liked them.

Oh yes, I will be sending her something in return.

The other day.
