so if the black is the neutral were does the earth go? should there be 5 incoming cables to the distribution box? actual main breaker and incoming feed is a long way away

the earth goes the the earth bar (green and yellow) If there isn't an earth get a different Qualified electrician . If you get stuck take pics and i will advise

I remember seeing an electrician connect a 240V drill between phase and earth in a 3 phase board to save lugging extension lead, transformer etc. on site!

Our towable generators at work have earth and neutral bonded for a reason I don't remember. We never use the neutral though.

thats fine on a generator thats is short time (1 day) and to feed one piece of class 1 equipment

i realy should know all this, except my electrics tutor just kept going on about the many ways you will die if you go near a switchboard just looking and i have a higher national unit in three phase systems
clyde marine, so long as you turn up you pass (i didnt say that either)

ships are different they combine N and earth but since its a big metal box surrounded by water thats fine

well got some daylight and cleared up the question of the neutral, i got one

cunningly hidden under a cover

also i am officially a plum, did all my testing before the lathe was wired up so the readings were a bit inaccurate to say the least.
tested the regulator again and it was dead, so went and got another, exact same spec

BUT it nearly cooked itself the same as the old one did, something is wrong elsewere

when the machine is powered up the 4 digits flash then the first 3 go out very fast and the 4th fades a bit slower, the power is being sapped somewere and its overloading the regulator.
forgot to take my bloody multi meter with me so couldnt do any tests with it hooked up to the lathe
took the circuit home and hooked a battery pack to the regulator, same thing happened but could measure the volt drop and it was pretty rapid!

one other thing i wanted to check but couldnt, AC voltage was 10.4v when i first measured it but dc was at 14.5 how can a rectifier boost voltage? dosnt it usualy reduce it a bit?

so much to do and not enough time

Yes it is quite normal to get more out of a rectifier than goes in, can't remember the explanation , been too long since I did it at college.

AC is measured in RMS, a power average. 10.4V will have a peak voltage of 14.7v. The rectifier and capacitors will charge to the peak voltage. It will drop some under load.

that is definitely a N hiding under the cover to stop you touching it when its live as there can be a difference in potential from ground to N witch can kill you. Very common in factories especially with discharge lighting

I've seen lots of glowing neutral / earth wires in the bottom of a fuseboard when a machine was installed with a neutral strapped to earth transformer in it!
Manufacturer had to pay to have board rewired

well gave up on the old tacho. all the i.c's are obsolete even if i could test them, so bought a nice little all in 1 display and driver unit. bench tested it with a reed switch and a fridge magnet taped to a motor and it worked great

so started to plumb in with some snazy panel mount LED's as well

BUT the little voltage rectifier/regulator circuit i buit is going very wrong somewere
here it is

couldnt be simpler! the resistors are for the LED's
AC into rectifier, DC out of rectifier to regulator with a couple of smoothing capacitors.
but seems to act like a dead short in the rectifier? should really of added a small fuse did this to the lathe pcb

i have checked and double checked and everything is going were it should, only other thing is to get some chunky rectifier diodes and make a full wave rectifier instead of relying on a nice easy package

You have a full-wave rectiifier. Does that convert AC power to DC? If so where is the big smoothing capacitor to finish converting to DC?

Can you post a diagram?
Are any of the tracks shorted or not cut fully on the Veroboard?
Did you measure the voltage out (AC or DC) before connecting it?
Tracks can be repaired by linking across with wire soldered to the nearest pad
