Cheers Richard. If his initial enquiries don't solve the problem Tom's offered to have torch and cooler back to base so he can check it out. The beauty of this forum/conversation is that I'm now fairly certain that there is a problem and it's not just my stupidity ( experience has shown that I can never rule that out entirely).
The motor and fan never shows any sign of slowing even against a coolant dead stop.

Sadly there doesn't seem to be much info on the Simaco site in respect to internal components or schematics of parts. It does kind of look like it may not really be a vane pump but rather a turbine type pump, if that is the case then too much back pressure could potentially cause a lack of flow.
Having said that these pumps are supposedly designed for welding applications so it should be up to pushing water through an 8m torch you would have thought.

Cheers for your investgations fellas! It is certainly behaving like a centrifugal pump, lots of flow that crashes when restricted. This thing is no chinese rubbish so something is at fault somewhere. If it was an old machine I would have been in that pump by now, If it wasn't for you crowd I wouldn't have even known I had a problem till I potentially frazzled my torch.

It's exactly the same as yours hood. I've had loads of em in bits and replaced parts etc. It's a single fly wheel gear on a shaft in a chamber.

Just had a thought, I was working on it beng a vane pump, either pumps one way or another. Its not so cut and dried with centrifugal pumps, maybe rotation is the issue. I will investigate tomorrow. Dearly beloveds' retirement bash tonight so end of play

Nope not in the Ceme pump, it is shaft driven with a seal. It is however the same type of pump, it would seem, as the Simaco. Both are turbine pumps so you can totally block the outlet and it will not do anything other than load the motor up a bit where the Procon Vane pumps or a Gear pump usually require a bypass valve.Magnets
That however brings up the problem that if the back pressure from the torch is too much then the pressure/flow from the pump will be low but they are supposedly designed for welding applications so you would think an 8m Tig torch should have been no problem.
With my Ceme pump the flow through my 8m torch is low (but not as low as @bletchmonster one) whereas when @Richard. had it he said it there was plenty, I suspect he may have been using a 4m torch.
Having said that there was still more flow through my torch than the OP is getting with a brand new pump so there does seem to be something amiss.

When I used yours hood there was as easy 2 lpm maybe more coming back into the tank. My torches are 4 mtrs they are also weldtec torches which have big bore lines giving better duty cycles. I like those ceme simaco gear pumps a lot. Extremely reliable and perfect for the job. Used them loads of times and not got a bad word to say about them.

It did work fine for me and I had no issues with the torch overheating, except when the cooler got switched off
The Procon however pushes the water through the torch at 3x the rate that the Ceme does but again I must stress the Ceme seemed to do its job for me.

The procon will. It's capable of much higher pressure.
They ain't better pumps though imho.
It's very easy to reck a procon with a moment of madness.
This is the sort of flow rate you should expect from a ceme/simaco pump. Here's one I adapted to fit a tweco cooler.

I think it would or how else can the low flow rate in comparison be explained?
Anyway as said mine was still sufficient to keep the torch cool even at AC200Amp, so something is definitely amiss with the OP's if his is getting so hot.
