nope 6mm ply is just not strong enough itll swell during installation then shrink back leaving voids underneath, which allows movement of the tile floor and eventually failure.

6 mm tile backer board is much more stable and although more expensive its still cheaper than tiling a floor twice.

having taken the floorboards up added extra 4x2 beams in. laid 3/4 block board down as the composite shower tray was on top then added the 6mm marine ply then sealed with waterproof sbr bonding agent layed and grouted the slate tiles with flexible adhesive and grout then sealed them with 2 coats of golv polish I think its pretty bombproof

Where people fall down with 6mm ply is not fixing properly. I glue and screw every 100mm. Ain't going nowhere. Also depends on the old floor sometimes it ain't worth using 6mm if the old floor is pants.

its my day to day job and just as you wouldnt weld up someones fire escape using a gassless sip i walk away from any job thats been formed in ply.

surely its the next stage that needs to be fully waterproof, after the floor has been levelled, and this will depend on whichever system your using wont it? If you were installing a wet room on the first floor you wouldn't replace the joists and floorboards with something waterproof, you'd select an appropriate wet room waterproofing 'kit' and fit over existing floor.

how can it absorb water when u have sealed it with sbr bonding agent and it doesn't re emulsify when u wet it what sealant do u use and don't say waterproof pva its pants. just for the books sbr is mixed in the sovereign tanking system for tanking walls in damp proofing and swimming pools

Wouldn't do a wet room with ply.... I'd tile a bathroom floor over ply. I've pulled enough tiles off ply in my life and haven't seen sign of adhesive causing the ply to blow unless water has been getting in from other means.

Whats so frustrating is the cempolay says its water and frost resistent and you can drivelight vehicles on it...so plenty strong enough. Can beoverpainted..

Cempolay deep says its sutable for laying vinyl in 3 to 4 hours. But mine is only going to be 3mm to 4mm max thickness.

Bostik say none of its suitable for a wetroom

I used ultra strong in my workshop. Yes it can take frost but the problem is it is actually quite porous - water soaks in quite a bit faster than concrete I would say. Anyway it wasn't a problem for me as I was using 2k epoxy floor paint.

It says water resistant...but its nice to hear real world use. It should not be a problem as its going to be totally covered with safety flooring.

Yeah you should be ok. Also it's not a true self levelling compound I would say it's in-between. So you can put a reasonable fall on it but obviously there will be a ultimate limitation to the angle but it's far higher than a true self leveller.

Can't remember off hand for sure but you may need to seal the surface you are applying it to before use.

This is the dilema. Surface under neath is old leveller.....(no idea on brand) with vinyl adhesive on top.

I have had a dehumidifer in for 2 days since i ripped the floor up.

I am just going up road to get a 6 inch scraper to clean it off but...not sure what to seal it with. The vinyl should keep direct water out and it wont come through the floor as its already sealed under the old floor.

Which is a bit strange as the fitter i had tbe safety fkooring of gave me bostik gold to use with it. But said use contact adhesive on the upstands/vertical surfaces.

Its becomig a nitemare. I phoned bostik and they said none of their levellers are suutable BUT they also said bostik gold is not suitable for wetroom floors. But the fitter makes his living out of using it...lol

If it helps I used Cemoplay ultrastrong on my workshop floor, it's been good and no issues.

Come across so many old skool builders using PVA to tile and seal. SBR or wet room kit equivalent every time.

Mine from last month taped and sealed ready for tiles.
