The 'biofuel' evangelists persuaded the EU to ban the labeling of fuel so the addition of alcohol or FAME was hidden from consumers. They were concerned that so many consumers would select non-blended fuels that more retailers would make the absence of it rather than the presence of it an positive selling point.

A little like, "we sell only ultra low sulfur diesel -------you will save the planet", but they didnt advertise the fact that at the same time the low sulfur----------will wreck you injection system because of lack of lubricity.

Ah yes - we told them that!

A whole new test had to be derived for wear testing. Then a new additive to replace the lost lubricity.

One of the few useful features of FAME is its lubricity - at least SOME of them. It depends on the source of the vegetable oil.

I can't help wondering if they knew it would wreck your injection system and considered it a bonus as it would help get older "un-economical" cars off the road sooner so they can then sell you a new "more economical" car.

Or am I crediting them with too much foresight/malice/greed ?

Not directly - it was more a case of ignoring messages that did not support their world view.

Premature death of older vehicles was just a bonus.

During this debate and the one on ending the manufacture of leaded the HMG's representatives were anxious to protect the 'marginal motorist'. That is someone running an elderly vehicle on a shoestring.
The German representatives were minded to ignore the impact on any vehicle over 10 years old.
The French and Italian representatives tended to do whatever the German ones said. Whilst they did not introduce discussion of the marginal motorist they did support the UK position when shown that the age profile of their car parc was more like that of the UK than (West) Germany.

So thanks to to HMG's representatives we had Lead Replacement for a while until the fleet renewed, and support for new Diesel lubricity tests and lubricity additives. We even had special dispensation to sell leaded for 'historic vehicles', although that soon became uneconomic.
To be fair to the German representative once the problem was shown to be real and effect Bosch pumps as well they supported it - after they had been subject to appropriate attitude adjustment by their motor industry.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, A little "reclaimed" veg oil in each fill. Because I don't like the low sulphur diesel, the sulphur was there for a very good reason.

I'm going to get some veg oil for the Surf, I ran it on 50/50 mix a few years ago and it definitely runs smoother.

My lads older Land Cruiser used to run fine on quite a health does of veg oil, If I put a bit too much in with the diesel in my 24valve engine, It use hunt on tick over like an old gardener truck, But was fine once warm, I used to leave a small wattage bulb lying next to the injector pump over night, Cured the hunting a treat.

The oil used to contain Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) which are rather hazardous. It hasn't been used since the 1970s.

Yeah if it has pcb's, we used to heat the work shop with it, coz we would process hundreds of trannies and caps a week (getting rid of the leather gear was the real drag) ((pun intended)) we even did the 'PCB run' picking up caps contaminated with it .
the heater was the type with no flue just a radiant 'sun' heater with two settings the second setting had its own tank of tranny oil, it used to work fine my car ran on it the heating at home etc burning it gives off dioxins.
this was all before the problems were known when burnt it produces dioxins and has to be burnt at 2000 deg for 2sec to break it down ie not in a heater!!! the irish pork scandal was all to do with the place making pig food that burnt a tiny dilluted amount in their dryers for the pig nuts the out fall from the heaters fell on food being produced the pigs then ate it and was in their fat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Irish_pork_crisis
BUT nobody will test me for it !! it seems to be swept under the carpet,
all the problems the polar bears are suffering is what I have had (except giving birth to a hermaphrodite)
I wont know that untill I reach the gestation period !!
There seems to be a closed book approach on it I think they are hoping that most of the sufferers will just die off and not bother them !!

Hum well thats not strictly true----- in japan maybe -- in good old uk it was still used in 80's because of the cost.

I'm on oil

Find out who else uses oil in your area and then arrange a shared delivery, this will give you savings over the delivery charges. Also the more you buy the cheaper it gets.

In the village there are 6 of us that buy oil from the same supplier. We all have a standing order set up for a fixed amount each month and the delivery is all done on the same day. Saves a lot of money this way

Parm might like to comment re the situation if he has had any dealings ??
