It was an EU law that changed the colours -a pet hate of mine. Apparently it was because of a small minority who are colour blind. As a concession to Britain they allowed us to keep a small coloured band around each one.
Will it change when we leave? Don't be silly!

It was EU guidance, not law, what made the change.

You are allowed up to 20% Colour banding to define the extinguisher and it designed use.

It has nothing to do with colour blind, that is a miss truth spread by certain people.

The pint they are only meant to be used by those who are trained in there use. If you are in a big staore and the fire alarm goes of you do one thing.

GET OUT.


You leave the fire fighting to them who are trained. The site will have rules and guide lines on what to do in an emergency and have trained people to use the extinguisher.

Problem I used to get as a fire marshal was sweeping the building when the alarm went off and finding people still working, the usual answer was "it's only another fire drill".

I worked in a Bank office where Chubb were fitting a fire alarm system, because it was on 2 floors.

All done and I told all the Staff the engineers were going to test the system. It was still going off when the Manager came storming through the office demanding to know what the noise was [he HAD been warned too]. I explained and his words were "Well, it's too loud, get them to turn it down" before turning on his heel and disappearing again. I had to work with him day in and day out....they walk among us and we're not allowed to injure them.

You couldn't make it up........

We used to test the alarm once a week and would announce on the PA it was a test, one of the fitters used to say "now hear this, now hear this" before the announcement until the HR guy told him we were not on onboard an American destroyer

This is a cultural thing....to get good behaviours in a fire situation, in an office or factory, the culture needs to be build first. The only way to do that is treat drills and false alarms as if they are real every time!

It takes time even on an fpso or an offshore platform.

they were doing a fire drill at the school where I was working . everyone lined up at the muster point I strolled out 5 mins later to get something out of the van and they were not amused I was busy and times money. I told em if my backside was on fire id be the 1st out

Years ago I was at a site in Hereford when there was a bomb scare, we were all told to assemble outside the building at the assembly point in the car park. Standing with me were two ex squaddies retraining as fabricator/welders. Adjoining the car park was a football field, one of the two squaddies turned to the other and said: "if there's a bomb in there, we need to be the other end of that football field". With that, the three of us went down the pub.

Electrical fires ,dry powder , use water & you will end up with curly hair! AS greg said water on wood n paper. Afff we used to use on car fires ,allways read the info label on the side of the extinguisher before using it ,if in doubt dont hesitate get the fire brigade out they will never be upset no matter how small a fire.

Remember being at a job early 90s ,full PPE , BA & chemical suits, etc the works ,for summit that had fallen of the back of a couriers wagon couldnt go near it DANGEROUS stuff! were there for 2hrs plus , needed specialist chemical disposal agent to remove the said Toxic substance!!! What appeared a guy n jeans & a t-shirt who bagged it up with a shovel n threw it in the back off a P100 pick and drove off home down the main street.

a job I was on for council were having the asbestos tiles removed by a specialist so builder could re roof it they came along with white paper overhalls on and face masks they got on stripping and putting the tiles in to plaggy bags after a while it was that hot one took his mask off and was having a fag while removing tiles balls to everyone else and neighbours with the dust then they removed the insulation in roof and ******** off they were supposed to hoover the attic when it was removed there u go

We've just prosecuted some cowboys messing around with asbestos. £1.3m in fines and £250k costs

I'm not exactly sure, ultimately I work for an agency of the DWP. Could be the department or central treasury
