No, it's not my fault, I'm not the criminal. I worked for my stuff, why has it become socially acceptable for other people to think they have the right to just take anything they fancy?

A load of good old fashioned country lynchings would soon see it right. Once heads mounted on pikes started appearing on people's fences the issue of theft would soon reduce drastically - the current handwringing namby pamby approach patently doesn't work.

I remember one thief telling me that if someone doesn't lock it up then it's entirely their fault, and he felt no remorse for what he'd done. Someone had left something out for a minute while they popped inside the house. I was only a teenager then, these days I would have done something about it.

Foolishly bought a pair of 'perfect headlights' from a guy on Gumtree...he said he had been posting for over a year and only dealt in headlights..had 17 other ads for lights so I sent £125 to his bank account...a week later and many phone calls one useless, broken, and cracked headlamp arrived. Since then he doesn't answer his phone any more. Not having his name or address (yes I know I'm a stupid git who believes people are honest) I tried to find out through gumtree..no chance..data protection...went to the police..sorry mate this is a civil matter so can't help you. The guy is still advertising the same lights for sale despite me reporting him to gumtree a few times....??

A satnav stolen from the locked glove box of one of our rep cars, policewoman I spoke to about it started the conversation along the lines of my driver being to blame as he hadn't cleaned the little circle from the suction fixing from the window glass. This idea of the victim being partly to blame by not taking reasonable care of their property has moved to the victim being entirely to blame. Maybe as the thief is harder to detect and after all we need someone to blame. Insurance companies love this approach as it gives their o̶w̶n̶ ̶c̶r̶o̶o̶k̶s̶ loss adjusters more wriggle room.

Sometimes people make mistakes, forget to lock the car, leave the shed door open overnight yet that shouldn't give anyone the right to help themselves, thieves steal things and they are to blame for their actions.

Get one of your mates to order a few headlights , cash on collection .
Meet up and arrange your refund/compensation , insert broken headlight .

Cocker..I did think of this but I doubt whether he would agree to 'collection' as there must be a good few other angry people after him......I must say I'm disappointed, but not surprised, at the attitude of the police...how is this a 'civil matter'??

I can understand your frustration but by definition it is a civil matter - you can make a claim through court and you may be successful, lots of people do this.

The legal action would start with Gumtree. They would soon release the guys details once a summons turned up in the post.

I just had a read at the gumtree terms and condx and can see your issue - http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ might be worth a read but no idea if it would help.

As Jim says above gumtree will have to release the information to 'your legal representative' but how does that work with the small claims process?

Contact 'buster jack' on facebook. He specialises in bank transfer fraud

Sorry guys been out for the day.... The police told me to get in touch with the actionfraud but that got me nowhere as it said the fraud wasn't 'suitable' for them to handle.

Gumtree were no help whatsoever and said they can only release the details if I get a data release form from the police..who said they couldn't..round and round we go.

I don't really use facebook but I'll take a look for buster jack...thanks for the help...I'm usually like a dog with a bone over something like this but all I'm getting is closed doors...if nothing else, I've learned a lesson for the future....

trouble is you become the looser and have to fork out twice for the gear and the inconvenience it causes I have cameras and beams round my house and a large mesh fence with barbed wire at the rear .I live in an isolated spot easy for crooks to burgle. I spent 800quid on the gear and have lost nothing in 30 years. before the security I lost a shotblasting pot wrought iron gate 5 brand new wheels and tires and had van and house burgled and garden gear nicked

That's not the trouble at all. It's my stuff, on my property - why should I need 17 layers of security to stop it walking off?

The real trouble is that so very few people get caught (and when they do they're more likely to get a free holiday because the poor darlings are so disadvantaged dontchaknow) that there's no real risk involved. You're not even allowed to shoot them or set the dogs on them these days.

That is the worst problem.....they think of stealing as a bit of shop lifting without the shop.

Shooting thieves should be allowed....IMHO.

we all know the score on what should be allowed but in reality it wont happen . I'm on warning for battering a couple of scrotes next time its prosecution so do u fancy taking the chance
