)..that removes corrosion, phos.acid converts it.Also jeno might contain phos.acid but there is obviously more to it as it's also a primer/paint which would save time. Horses for courses an' all that)Some years ago I got a visit from a sovereign chemicals rep. he demonstrated a chemical that would remove oxidization from coins as quick as blinking, literally dipped in and pulled out and it was shiny. The really impressive thing was it was completely safe to use..you could pour it in to the palm of your hand. Can't remember what it was called or if it's still available (maybe it turned out not to be so safe). Anyone come across it?
Back to Gibbs...apparently it does make a difference to the price if Matt gets several orders, if he gets enough he'll do at least -20% and maybe more... c'mon guys..hands in pockets, you know you want to

I asked Matt for a quote for 2 cans of this stuff and here is his reply:
"At the moment I have had two other members from the forum showing an interest in three cans between them so the best I could offer is a 10% discount. If you would like to wait and see if any more show an interest I may be able to drop the price a bit more (I will put the same question to them).
The postage should be about £4.25 but I can let you know tomorrow for certain as I have some new lighter packaging to try."

So taking into account import costs, £10 a can is not bad. I'm ordering some, it occurred to me that it would be good for spraying the file cabinets and Dexion shelving I have in the shed, saves patching the paint.

Test results are in.
I sanded a section of the bonnet on my everyday car (as you do), sprayed some of the gibbs stuff onto it, then left it out in the rain for a few days.
It has been cold and wet here in sunny Bedford. Every night there's been heavy condensation, and most days it's rained heavily.
The photo might look like a complete failure, but it's a heck of a lot better than untreated mild steel which can be made to rust just by looking at it. It's about 4 days of exposure.
After the first night I had little light brown spots developing, and they've made it to fully blown rust. Some sort of anode thing going on there I'll guess. That's an end to my UK bare metal ratrod idea.
Though the Renault I have inside the workshop with half the panels in bare metal is still perfect. Bench I sprayed looks pretty good too. I'm thinking Gibbs is an inside treatment for us UK folk.
Still to confirm it's overpaintable. Ought to do that before I spray too much of the Renault with the stuff. Another update soon.

I've just sent everyone who has expressed an interest an email saying that I've received enough orders to give a 20% discount (assuming that all of the orders are followed through). So it is now only £10 per can to them and anyone else who places an order until my first shipment is exhausted.

Malcolm, Thanks for posting your experiment. I'm glad that you're happy with the results so far inside your workshop. But I must admit that I would of expected better results from your test outside (although being left out in the rain is pretty extreme I supose). Could I just ask how long you left the oil on before you wiped it off (assuming you did wipe it off) and how heavy a coating it was as obviously the longer it is left to soak in (maybe even reapplying a few times) the more protection it is going to offer. I will be able to post some of my own tests once I get my bloomin camera working again!

I sprayed the stuff on quite heavily and wiped it around a bit with my fingers, but didn't wipe it off. I wonder whether finger grease causes problems. Might be worth trying some other ways of applying it. Worth comparing a few different treatments too.
Could be fun to test, and I've got a lot of panelwork to try as that's now my ex-Renault. I got back one I restored earlier at the weekend. A much nicer drive.

More progress. It really is overpaintable! I wiped a bit more on before painting just to be sure.
Thought I'd try a more interesting test. Back to back comparison of Gibbs wiped on thickly, Gibbs wiped on thickly then wiped off after 1 hour, WD40, waxoyl, autoglym polish, engine oil, and untreated bare metal.
Wonder if dust and bits of rag getting into the Gibbs had caused the anode effect, so was a little more careful this time. All outside in the rain again.

This is just for fun really - I've decided it's the bees knees for protecting bare metal Renaults in the garage over winter (which is what I bought it for).
Works very well as a penetrant too. I'm interested to see how it compares to waxoyl as I've been having problems with rust appearing in seams on cars that have been waxoyled - something that penetrates into seams could be worth a shot..

As an asside I did my own experiment last night out of nesessity when some old potatoes that had been left on a wooden worktop (not by myself I must add) leaked out of the bag and left a nice stain! I gave the wood a good soaking and although the stain is still visible it is a lot better than it was and still seems to be improving with time. I wouldn't suggest using it on food preparing surfaces but it has left it incredibly smooth so I may try it on some other items.

Malcom, I was away a bit and noticed on the last page you sprayed gibbs on and left it exposed to rain. No, that's not the main intention of that product...it's for indoor storage of metal that it shines at. It's wicked good stuff but not so good that you can let mother nature pee all over it...
