M9 x 1.25 is a pretty common brake caliper slide pin thread, you could either get a pair of slide pins or the relevant die quite easily.

I got a M9 x 1.25mm die and tap set (slide pin problems as @Ubique highlights above)

Turn the stock to 8.8/8.9 and run a split die down it.

I've just found some silver steel rod, 8.85mm in diameter.
Suitable?

You can run a die down silver steel but use decent cutting oil so it doesn't tear the surface up. It's not the very best material for your job but it should do. Tends to rust quite readily.

What are these studs retaining?

Hello, I had an aluminium radiator made for the DS. Quite light, sits on rubber blocks. These studs go through the rubber blocks into the bottom frame. Another strap at the top helps locate it.
I have plenty of half inch brass rod from my clock making, maybe that would be better.
