I've never really bothered, just burn through any thin oil coating. (Stick welds).
I guess its more important for MIG? Havn't tried migging through oil...
MIG wouldnt go through paint like the old Stick does tho.
That would be the Chlorinated brake cleaner, still used AFIK in the US but banned in UK for yonks.
