(I do wonder.... with new cars with these Lane Assist / Warning gadgets - do these nuggets feel safer & spend even more time scrolling & staring at their phone screens?).

I drive a fair few brand new hire cars through work and I must admit, lane assist would be better if there was more consistency with it...

I had a ford Kuga the other week and the lane assist was weak at best...very minor rumble through the wheel if you got close to the line...but then if you started to cross the line it would snatch you back over quite violently...but then compare that to the tourneo I had a few months ago and as long as your hand was on the wheel it would guide you perfectly down the road through bends keeping you dead central...

I have also had bmws that have it but it just doesn't work and a car (can't remember which) that would randomly ping an alarm sound and flash red on the dash that the driver was tired and must stop...but I couldn't figure out how it was deciding this as I was on cruise control on a relatively straight road and the car wasn't wandering about...Very distracting

Mine has the Lane Departure or Lane Keeping Assist feature, but it lies well inside chocolate fireguard territory.

I would value the feature at night, in the rain, on narrow rural roads with no road markings, especially when the oncoming creature hasn't dipped its headlights.

It only works when it can see the white lines.

Er, if I can see the white lines, I don't need any Lane Keeping Assist, thank you.

Interestingly in England 3.3 metres equals 10' 9"

Using Google to convert 3.3 metres it gives 10' 8". That could explain why there are so many bridge strikes on that bridge in NI.

Rounding errors can be lethal!

EtA: We all know about that low bridge that suddenly started having strikes, don't we? The one where the highways resurfaced the road, but forgot to update the new clearance between the bridge and the raised road surface.................................

I turned a lot of the driver assist / safety stuff off on my work Volvo (not the one pictured in the ditch)
The lane keeping was pretty violent.
Hit a dip at moderate speed that I knew about, I thought the car was trying to kill me, the seat belt tightened so much I couldn't breath!

Our EV has this...it's going back in a week and I'm happy to see the back of it .

Renault/Dacia have a dash button to "personalise" the safety systems....until other manufacturers fit buttons I'm just sticking with the ones that have it!

Used to get a chuckle out of the descriptions for completely destroyed vehicles...had 1 customer think they would get it cheaper if they didn't tell us it was a mangled wreck so they called it through as a cut out won't start fault...except the delivery address was a body shop...I got there and it's on its roof after rolling multiple times, every panel ruined, every air bag deployed, all 4 wheels pointing different ways, snapped springs, bent a pillars...I've got a photo somewhere I will try and dig out

All JLR products have a 'Personalise' feature that enables you to set all of these to 'Off' and then only have one button to press when you start the car.

They were just a bit light on the details of why it cut out and won't restart...

Oh no...it started...I drove it off the bed and into copart...it didn't like it, but it didn't have much choice
