OK, based on recommendations above I'm going for a Parweld Xti 160. Weldequip are offering them for 188 inc VAT and delivery (cheaper than the Clarke 160 ex VAT as daleyd said), with TIG conversion kit for a tad under 80 extra. Seems a good deal. It may or may may not be man enough for the project I described, but it'll get me going anyway, and if farmers like 'em, well that's good! I have other things in mind which I'm sure it will be capable of (if I am!), such as making box section frames for workshop benching - it would pay for itself doing that alone. If I get along with it I can upgrade.
Jim - thanks for your offer of tuition, but the chances of me finding myself in Southampton are small to zero. Good to know it's possible to learn basic metal sticking in an hour tho!
Thanks all for pointing me in the right direction. I'm looking forward to learning some new stuff and it'll be interesting to see what SWMBO makes of the eerie blue light emanating from the dungeons... (workshop is in the cellars of an ex-pub).
