It's for putting the set on a saw blade i.e pushing the teeth to alternate sides to give the correct kerf to stop the saw jamming.

Ooh, so actually potentially useful! I have another tool for setting saws, but its quite different, you bend it by hand. It just occurred to me when I took the picture that the name might be a clue after puzzling for several years!

I don't know if its visible, but the anvil is adjustable and numbered 1 to 10. There's a bar that comes out and grabs it first then the hammer comes forward. Dashed clever what?

There is a tooth sharpener what goes with it, a triangle file held in a gig to re edge the teeth.

The Number is the relate to the number of teeth per inch.

I remember my dad who was a chippy using a similar one and a triangular file to sharpen the teeth.

Yes, my uncle was a chippy as well, I can remember him doing my Dad's saw but he didn't use the jig he did it freehand.

I got one like it years ago before hardened teeth became the norm and saws became disposable items. I once set and sharpened an old saw for a friend after he had struggled to cut a piece of 3x2 and he swore blind I'd brought him a different saw back

Easy way to tell harden teeth on a throw away saw.
They are blue.
But you can still get decent saws, but you pay a price.

aye they're all broken....They cut very well, but are just too damm fragile for me, mind you they're almost throwawayable compared to resharpening oldskool saws. still haven't found anyone decent over here who can sharpen them & the bandsaw blades... must search harder.

sharpened the saw freehand but not set the teeth by hand not much cop nowadays all the saws are hardened teeth throw away
I had a good quality distan and sandvic saw till some thieving tw ...t pinched them at work

If the saw becomes blunt but the teeth are intact I don't suppose there's any reason why you couldn't heat it enough to remove the temper then have a saw you can resharpen?

I used to sharpen saws as a bit of a sideline, a sawfile was about worn out after doing no more than a couple of panel saws, add the cost of that to the time involved to do it properly and you can buy a new saw for far less money,
as an aside a worn sawfile ground down to a point makes a very comfortable to hold scriber.

Well with the comments about not being able to get decent saws without spending lots of money I thought it might be a cheap way for those who like to hand sharpen and set them.

To be fair the saw blades theyre asking if you need sharpening here are usually 80-100cm across and used on wood saws. I don't want to know what a replacement blade for satan the stealer of fingers aka my diesel powered log saw costs but its going to be more than a few quid to the bods with the saw grinding setups...
