The 4wd duster was used by the field engineers where i work after initial scepticism they proved to be reliable and good load luggers.
Personally we have a modern forrester , the older ones seem bullet proof if looked after if you dont mind the styling .

I got several customers with Dacia cars - they not been bad at all...

No real niggles - nothing too difficult to repair on them - getting spares is a bit hit or miss - lots of choices on parts for same models.

No real "dealer look up" for motorfactors catalogues is the issue - not option for the aftermarket to look at "genuine"...

X5 3.0d..7 seats, fantastic engines that can see 500,000 and a true 4x4 with luxury. 10K could buy you a nice one with the later LCI trim.

I run a P2 V70 Tom and it’s a fine workhorse. Parts are a bit pricy sometimes and some jobs a pain but then when are motors not?

The boot is huge and if you put the seats down it’s genuinely cavernous. Steering lock is mince though, think Exxon Valdez but not quite as nimble. Good poke on the motor but not quick, oodles of torque though.

I’ve never had one, and don’t hear much about them recently but would an older Landcruiser do the job? I still have the P3 XC70 a very nice place to be with few real issues in 10 years apart from a couple of wheel bearings and a suspension bush.

Land cruiser good but prices are astronomic cos of their reputation (I can't think who buys them at the prices I've seen..)

Semi silly suggestion time but how about a 4.2 or 5.0 supercharged L322? They're cheap enough because of the running costs but if you're not doing big miles then slightly irrelevant. The petrol is more suitable than the diesel and from what I understand the AJV8 is pretty bomb proof. They don't tend to suffer much on the rust side of things and it's easily preventable.

I've not found ours horrendous on servicing (albeit the 3.6 and 4.4TDV8), they're a little heavy on suspension components (it's a heavy car) but parts actually aren't horrendous in cost and they're run of the mill.

Fantastic vehicles to drive and travel in due to the comfort and power. Amazing tow vehicles and even the diesel V8s sound great. Road tax being very high is the main killer.

There's loads of them about so you can almost treat them as disposable buy one, run it into the ground for 5 years and then sell it for parts and move onto the next one.

Quick Google suggests you can get two for your budget...

On a serious note 4wd excepting I used to get loads in my Berlingo multi space.

You've retired, excellent news.
My contrary view on needing to transport lawnmowers, strimmers and tools etc. If they want their grass cutting or strimming, let them buy their own. Then you can arrive in the car you want, not need, cut their grass, eat all their biscuits and go home.
Better still, let them do it.

I never invested time into mine to get it good and have given it to someone who has that time now. Tbh, it needed more work than my 110 to get it right. I was dissapointed given the prestige look of the car that it wasn't finished a lot better underneath personally. So dissapointed that I drive an old BMW 5 series as my daily instead now and was pleased to do so.

Neither of the ones I've owned have suffered and I never really did anything underneath to prevent it but they are or were used regularly so I find that if they're being driven stuff doesn't tend to sit there and cause issues as it gets washed / blown off by driving.

Get one that doesn't have any and should last even with a little bit of minor care.

This is what I should have done. I bought badly... but definitely learn from my mistake if anyone is thinking of buying one.

They aren't cheap to run though - in terms of parts. Like budget for regular tyres, brakes and bushes etc....

What about a v8 diesel cayenne? I have a v6 diesel and its been really good apart from a slow oil leak from the rear main area. They all do it apparently and it's not a lot and doesn't drip to the floor.

The v8 dont have the same issue so the next one I get will be the v8 diesel.

Whatever you go for, do yourself a favour and stay away from anything fitted with a CVT gearbox unless you’re addicted to a gearbox which cannot decide which gear it should be in and sounds like the clutch is constantly slipping.
I had a Rav 4 with it and it absolutely done my head in so the car was in my possession for about 2 months.

It’s the under hard acceleration or going uphill symptom that I’m trying to to describe. I hear some people don’t mind it but I personally hated it.

My experience of BMW (seem to ha e a 5 series addiction too) is that they are easy DIY to work on for most stuff. With all you've done on the Jag you'd happily be able to do anything I've done on my BMs. I don't know the X5 but the interiors always looked similar to my e39 5 series back when I had that and ergonomically that was one of the nicest cars I'd ever sat in and driven.

There's also a fairly good choice of quality aftermarket parts for the BMWs so I'm less worried about not getting genuine parts compared to the land rover stuff (for example)

May be hard to find, but how about a well-sorted Disco 2 TD5 auto like mine (not for sale).

You know all the mechanicals & it's quiet and comfortable compared to a 90/110.

Mine is pre-2001 rates-change so £360 tax, £200 insurance, no DPF worries, 25 to 30mpg doing similar mileage as you.
Got mine for £2k in 2018 & did the chassis, sills & inner wheel-arch welding myself.
Everything else has been normal maintenance & parts, & I've only used about half your budget so far.

I do scan online with a £10k budget same as you, but nothing survives scrutiny or appeals enough to change, really.
For my convenience, has to be a Torque-converter gearbox; no CVT or DSG, which rules out most honda, toyota, vw, audi, seat, etc, although there are some exceptions.
It's sad that so many manufacturers went tech-crazy in pursuit of low emissions and moved away from long-term reliability...

I didn't realise the RX 450h had a CVT gearbox, I am thinking about one to replace the Surf (if or when the day comes) I assume the RX400h is similar?
My wife's Honda HRV has one of those boxes and it's horrific!
Sounds like a huge moped whining away.
We should have test drove it on some faster roads.
