I read somewhere that the sole purpose of the 4 minute warning was to give the west time to get their nukes in the air and on the way to Russia.

What did Coventry have that required that sort of siren, that the police controlled ?

They are / were everywhere, controlled by the Royal Observer Corps until disbandment, then they became a CIVPOL responsibility. Local control under direction rather than national for obvious reasons, most were installed at GPO exchanges, or close by.

I used to live not 5 mins from the biggest Nuc weapons storage facility on the west coat of America....
I asked my landlord if he was worried.....
he said if u can get worried in about 200th of a milli second, dont worry about it.....hahaha....

I was working in Cincinnati back in 2000 . . . driving along . . . 4 minute warning seemed to go off . . . no idea what I was supposed to do, so carried on back to where I was living. Turns out it was the tornado warning sirens! Now they also send all network wide test messages.

The year before, I was living in Jamestown, upstate NY, sound asleep in bed the first week there . . . nuclear attack siren seemed to be going on and on and on . . . nowt I could do, so stayed in my apartment and when it went off, went back to sleep. Took me a few days to work out it was the big group of sirens on top of big pole at the local fire house down the road, giving full 360 degree coverage - it called the firemen in to go out on the call. Wasnt exactly immediate response - heard it one day - finished my ablutions, locked up, wandered down to the car, up the road, out onto the main road, 3 lanes each way, up the road, called in the gas station, filled up, paid , wandered back out to the car . . . and the fire engine went past . . .

Due to living Very close we get W little booklet every year saying what to do in event of a cluster- I mean accident

it’s all very common sensed but could you imagine the chaos if anything went wrong? Look at the fuel and loo roll situation
still at least we get a front row seat

The thing to do is 1st is put the kettle on and make a nice cuppa, then take your tea into the garden and roll yourself a nice smoke and just enjoy the fireworks...would rather die in my own house than a sports hall with 2 thousand strangers fighting for a metal framed bed.

Our primary school teacher told us that and got a proper telling off by the head we used to do drills at school for a fallout, like taking a smartie in place of what ever pill we were meant to take and shutting curtains and windows

Not only that, but they'll regularly have your colleagues on site sniffing around and poking at things they don't like the look of, and that is a frightening prospect for any site that doesn't have its house in order

IMHO you're safer living next to a top tier COMAH site in the UK, than you would be living next to some large non-COMAH sites!

The less reassuring thing is sellafield police (bnp?) have a really bad reputation round hear for being useless!
It will be maybe 6 years ago some Middle Eastern fellers in their garb rocked up at a mates driveway got out a very big spotting scope and were looking at site, rimbo come out and they were asking questions about patrolles and the nearest police station ect! Then buggerd off and the bnp were called and were not interested in the slightest. A few nights later we were lamping up the bleng and could see this little light in the woods, so gets out and good to see
Bugger me if it’s not the 4 of them sat round a camp fire MILES from anywhere with a nice view over site, they got real pissy about being found and we called the police again and they were not going to come out, when they did they found a few hundred photos and sketches and notes about the site fences and police activity.
That never made the news did it!
I’ve been properly stopped by ARU Twice now while shooting despite ringing in the control room and yet where were they when ferric bird drove post the bloody gates?
Then things like leaving guns and ammo at the local gun range or the roof of their car and driving off

But they tell you if the chopper goes down there ain’t much chance of survival

Sounds like the airlines telling us to put a life jacket on with a little whistle and go into the brace position at 450Kts while going into a dive over the sea

That's designed to snap your neck (less compo for a death than a survivor with 'life changing' injuries), the lifejackets are to make recovery & identification easier - the lifejackets are (or should be) marked with the seat number. Military transports (not Para or Tac.) have rear facing seats...

Reminds me of the iodine tablets we all got issued in the yard and surrounding town in case of a nuclear leak, which we were supposed to take before filing past the clock in an orderly fashion.... sod that, I’ll be going over the gate thanks.

I did once fall asleep on the bog hungover following a rather stupid school night session, and woke up to the nuclear siren going off. That concentrated the mind a bit. Turns out they were doing a multi agency exercise on site

Such a cheery thread. As impressionable outgoing teenagers in the 80’s we decided we were digging a nuclear fallout shelter in the local woods. Got as far as about a coffin dig size then got bored and used it as a pit to fill with lighter gas and chuck lit matches in. After we got bored with that That one of the lads (who went on to be a steel erector) decided it would be fun to shin up a young birch with a clear take off with a rope, tie the rope to the top, and then we would pull it to the ground and let it go, thus catapulting him a a good few yards across the woods, so I guess we werent too bothered about the sunny mushroom cloud ( I should really write a book about my funny life experiences but the funniest stuff happened at work and can’t write about that )

The place I worked had a chirpy alarm that sounds every 10 secs or so, it’s proper annoying, the reason it does it is so you can be sure the alarm is still working ok. If it stops you get out, or obviously if it goes off for real you get out - the “chirping” was situation normal.

If things went wrong and there was a criticality accident then you are told to run, not walk. Completely contrary to normal emergency procedures where you are always told to walk calmly to exit.

I've been somewhere (not Dounreay) that has the same 'comforter', can't remember where, for the life of me.

That's going to annoy me now.
